Adam Green Talks HATCHET 2!

FANGORIA recently caught up with writer/director Adam Green to discuss his recently announced feature FROZEN, and the filmmaker dropped some tid-bits about HATCHET 2. "The phone keeps ringing and people are trying real hard to get me to commit to doing it," Green told FANGO. "And I can tell you that it is going to happen. At one point, I was just going to write it, but now I'm hearing all these stories about how I'm going to direct it too, and I can definitely tell you that I haven’t agreed to do that."

He confesses that timing is what will decide if he'll return to the director's chair. "The situation is that I’m committed to FROZEN, which I start shooting in February, and then I’m doing a romantic comedy that Chris Columbus is producing called GOD ONLY KNOWS. Right now, the HATCHET people are saying they would like the movie to be in theaters next September, and I don’t know if I can do the best job as director under those circumstances."

He explains what we can expect from the eventual sequel when it does roll before camera. "HATCHET 2 is going to start on the same night as the first film ended, and in the very next frame. I have no reason to think that Kane Hodder won’t be back, even if I’m not directing. Victor Crowley is his character. If it’s my story, Tony Todd will be back, and Joel David Moore as well."

For more on the recently announced FROZEN, check out the official press release in our previous post HERE!

Also, Green just shot the first episode for his XBox Live "horror meets comedy" show FAIRY TALE POLICE starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Parry Shen. Check out the teaser trailer below!

Transcript From Guillermo Del Toro's BD-LIVE Chat!

Director Guillermo Del Toro participated in the first ever BD-LIVE chat last night.

Basically, if you own a Blu-Ray player or PS3 and pop in your BD copy of HELLBOY 2, Guillermo answered scores of questions live in real time as the movie played. Very cool indeed!

For those of you who have not yet made the BD transition, you can read the entire transcript below. While not very scoop-heavy (ie: no new HOBBIT info yet) it's a fantastic, personal and funny Q&A with one of the best film makers of our generation. There were some interesting nuggets of info; we will finally see a special edition director's cut of his very underrated MIMIC sometime in the not-too-distant future, and a Blu-Ray edition of THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE! He also mentions a possible B.P.R.D television series, which I pray actually happens.

Also, be sure to head over to www.universalhidef.com and register for a free account to be updated on more cool events like this.

Enjoy!

Q:Are you there?
A:Hello this is Guillermo.

11/23/2008 18:06:11
Q:Did you make a cameo in Hellboy 2?
A:No- but I voice most- if not all -the creatures in the film. I've been doing that since CRONOS.

11/23/2008 18:07:20
Q:Is there any creatures that didn't make it in Hellboy 2 that you can tell us about?
A:Go to the fabulous website Deltorofilms.com and explore for Ydrig the three-headed dog!! It was a great design but too expensive

11/23/2008 18:08:02
Q:Universal announced a pretty busy slate for you after "The Hobbit." Will we see a Hellboy 3?
A:If its up to me- yes!! But it is a corporate decision and regimes change very rapidly at these studios.

11/23/2008 18:08:53
Q:Have you assembled any thoughts/ideas for the third 'Hellboy' yet?
A:Oh, Yes- It is the End Of Days- and HB is VERY involved in bringing down the firestorm.

11/23/2008 18:12:11
Q:Will we see a director's cut off Hellboy2?
A:yeah, you saw it. it was the theatrical release. there is no real missing scenes to speak of. A little change here and there, but not enough to justify a director's cut.

11/23/2008 18:13:05
Q:What kind of compromises do you have to make on lower budget films?
A:Time and money. And you have to scale your imagination to fit the budget- but ALWAYS push for the MOST you can get from that budget. A filmmaker should NEVER be comfortable with his budget. $85 or $85,000,000 you should always strive for making a film look bigger than its cost.

11/23/2008 18:14:25
Q:Will there be a Lobster Johnson or Abe Sapien movie/miniseries/etc as in the comic books?
A:I would love to a BPRD series happen and we will pitch it to NBC/Universal/sci-fi next year. but still undetermined...

11/23/2008 18:14:37
Q:Any followups similar to Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth in mind?
A:yes. I am trying to finish a story but it will take me a few years to finish. It's called saturn and the end of day.

11/23/2008 18:17:19
Q:What scene took the longest to film and how long was it?
A:I believe the elemental scene took a couple of weeks and was the longest along with the TROLL MARKET and GOLDEN ARMY scene.

11/23/2008 18:18:19
Q:A recurring theme in your movies is fate (like HB not accepting his destiny). Do you believe in fate?
A:i believe in what jim cameron said in terminator, no fate but what we make. That was a good way of putting it . I believe in choice more than destiny... which is horrible for a fat man.

11/23/2008 18:19:38
Q:What was your favorite location or set for Hellboy 2?
A:I loved the NY backlot streets because i had a golf CART and speeded through it like a maniac and stole the Cheetos off the Hot Dog vendor cart every night!!!

11/23/2008 18:20:49
Q:If you could be invisible for 48 hours - who would you follow and why?
A:I would break into an Ice cream factory and swim in a vat of vanilla all night.

11/23/2008 18:21:48
Q:There any professionals who worked with you on Hellboy II that will be joining you on the Hobbit?
A:Hopefully Mignola, Barlowe, Spectral Motion, Guillermo Navarro and others...

11/23/2008 18:23:05
Q:Do the possibilities that Blu-rays now provide alter your approach to filmmaking? If so, how?
A:Not really- Only in as much as the home video presentation is concerned. BUT I think it is a FANTASTIC format and the best we are bound to see for a long time.

11/23/2008 18:23:45
Q:Did you read comic books when you were growing up?
A:Oh, absolutely- and like everyone else- had my mother throw them away one deadly afternoon (she has not apologized yet), and I have been collecting them for about 40 years.

11/23/2008 18:26:01
Q:How did you and Mike Mignola meet?
A:We met in Portland, Oregon, for the purposes of discussing HELLBOY as a film. We spent most of the day talking about classical horror writers (Le Fanu, MR James, Hope Hodgson, Lovecraft, etc.) and browsing through POWELL's Bookstore, arguably the best bookstore in the world.

11/23/2008 18:26:54
Q:WHO CAME UP WITH THE BARRY MANILOW IDEA?
A:i did. and i'm sad to report that it was quite autobiographical.

11/23/2008 18:27:36
Q:WILL HB JR BEPART OF HB3?
A:I'm not at liberty to discuss that right now, but they have a lot to do with how the movie ends. Yes.

11/23/2008 18:28:18
Q:Will there be a Blu-Ray version of El Espinazo del diablo? If so what kind of extras can we expect?
A:yes. javier and i are working on it right now. it is my hope that we can provide with many more extras than what we have soo far..including the old dvd commentaries and perhaps do an exploration of the trasnalation of gothic. Perhaps do a doc on what gothic romance is and how it got translated into the context of the spanish civil war.

11/23/2008 18:29:07
Q:How did all the other elementals die?
A:the original elemental was burned-- burning it to death. Liz was burning it to death with her fire.

11/23/2008 18:29:34
Q:What do you think of the Blu-ray format and its future outlook? Do you see it surviving digital downloads?
A:i do and i hope so cause i find it to be the ideal to preserve the movie. I think the biggest danger that blu-ray faces is that a lot of people will be happy with downloading the movie and keeping them on a hard drive, which is what happened to cds vs mp3s.

11/23/2008 18:30:07
Q:Will you bring back Myers in a future Hellboy movie?
A:my idea is to bring myers back in the 3rd one. a very, very changed myers who has been dented and grizzled, a very dented, very rough myers who definitely has a part in the fate of hellboy and the world.

11/23/2008 18:30:22
Q:Why do trolls eat cats?
A:They taste good and make funny noises when swallowed whole. No- seriously, Trolls would prefer kids, but they are not easy to come by these days, so cats became a substitute for Scottish Trolls.

11/23/2008 18:31:34
Q:Is there a difference in the way you approach and write your Spanish Language films versus your English Lang ones?
A:I guess the mindset is very different up to a point because the rhythm and dialogue are different when i'm doing a commercial genre movie than when i'm doing something perhaps more obscure. in reality, it's becoming closer and closer the way i write both and i don't make much of a disctinction between the two, though, i think some distinction remains.

11/23/2008 18:32:57
Q:Will you be using Danny Elfman as a composer again on future projects?
A:Absolutely, but not until after the HOBBIT films.

11/23/2008 18:34:48
Q:WILL RED EVER LET HIS HORNS GROW?
A:if there's a third movie, yes, for a long part of the movie!

11/23/2008 18:35:36
Q:IS GUILLERMO REALLY ONLINE OR DID HE ANSWER THESE IN ADVNANCE?
A:i am online in new zealand. and i answered about 50 questions beforehand.

11/23/2008 18:36:05
Q:Is there one of your movies that is particularly close to your heart?
A:The three that i love the most are pan's labyrinth and devil's backbone in an exact tie, and hellboy 2 the third one.

11/23/2008 18:36:53
Q:WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED ON HB THAT YOU BROUGHT TO HB2?
A:i think to keep the plot simple and easy to follow and to make a movie with more monsters. and finally to be a little more free because at the end of the day, even though i was trying to be faithful to mignola's comic...the first hellboy was very different on it own.

11/23/2008 18:37:59
Q:Why did Prince Nuada shatter into pieces when he died, but the Princess did not?
A:because nuada transforms into stone right at the time his knees hit the floor...but beyond that, the idea is that her legacy has more of an endurance than his but anecdotally , he hits the ground as he transforms. if you remember the kings torso also crumbles when nuada pulls out the piece of the crown.

11/23/2008 18:39:01
Q:WAS PAN'S MORE CHALLENGING TO MAKE?
A:for different reasons, they were both very challenging....in order of painful shoots, the most diffiuclt was mimic, then pan's, and then hb2.

11/23/2008 18:39:31
Q:THE TOOTH FAIRIES ARE CREEPY. HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE CONCEPT FOR THEM?
A:when i was a kid i found it really disgusting that the tooth fairy would take dead tissues away from my pillow. why would the tooth fairy want it and what would he do with it. for some strange reason i though that it was eating them. that idea that the tooth fairy ate it. has been festering in my brain ever since.

11/23/2008 18:40:17
Q:Who is your favorite monster of all time?
A:the creature of frankenstein. then a close second is the creature from the black lagoon. they were monsters i loved more than the humans around them when i was a kid.

11/23/2008 18:41:25
Q:Why are trolls afraid of canaries?
A:there's many quirks like that in the fairy tale lore. originally, it was about trolls are afraid of red robins, but the problem was there was not a single red robin in budapest, so we made it a canary, which was funnier, I thought.

11/23/2008 18:42:31
Q:Do you personally sit in on the creation of the soundtrack (effects) for each of your movies?
A:yes. 100 percent. i am very hands on, and i have at least 2 or 3 foley sessions of my own when i do noises and my own pass at some foley. then i end up having 1, 2 or in the case of hellboy, 4 or 5 adr sessions to do the voices of the creatures.

11/23/2008 18:43:16
Q:Do you personally sit in on the creation of the soundtrack (effects) for each of your movies?
A:also very heavily involved in the editing of the sourntracks and i am a pain in the ass in the editing room. they really want to kill me. (cont...)

11/23/2008 18:44:32
Q:what feeling do you have on the last day of working on a film?
A:relief and horror - both in equal measure because i know that post partum depression is about to ensue but also one of the first free days i have had in weeks or months.

11/23/2008 18:45:13
Q:what is your favorite Hellboy line?
A:'i'm not a baby i'm a tumor', which i came up with right on the shooting day, and it was quite shocking for the studio when they saw it. :)

11/23/2008 18:45:21
Q:What's your favorite Hellboy line?
A:It's not a baby, it's a tumore. Which i came up with on that day of shooting. the studio was quite shocked when they saw it! :)

11/23/2008 18:47:12
Q:Do you prefer to film on location or on sound stages?
A:Always sound stages. Shooting around Sunlight and wind, etc. is a pain in the ass, but the BEAUTY of a real landscape cannot be captured ANY OTHER way. PAN'S LABYRINTH was shot with a heavy dose of location work although every single space and building in the film was a set.

11/23/2008 18:48:21
Q:When you first start developing an original screenplay, what is your daily writing process?
A:i try to write early in the morning. it is the first thing i do. i just try to write for two hours whether i am inspired or not. i make it a point to read only material that is relevant to the screenplay i'm writing and to only watch movies and docs that are relevant.

11/23/2008 18:48:48
Q:When you first start developing an original screenplay, what is your daily writing process?
A:i like to do as much research as i can. historical or anecdotal, cause it confronts you with things that you never imagined. it doesn't matter if it's a fantasy project. research, reading, and writing is ultimately a result of what you are watching.

11/23/2008 18:49:39
Q:What are you watching on television?
A:i am actually just downloading the 4th season of prison break. both my wife and i are addicted to prison break, and we can't wait for the new season. we are rewatching the wire. i watched it already, but now that the 5 seasons are complete, i'm starting to watch the unit.

11/23/2008 18:50:41
Q:WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COMIC BOOK?
A:anything related to hellboy or mike mignola's bprd universe. but i also love all of jack kirby, the donald duck comics. i love john stanley, little lulu comics that were brilliant...bernie wrightson. anything by richard corben. I love 1000 comic books or so...

11/23/2008 18:51:33
Q:With all the distractions around you how do you not let others things cloud your own vision for the film.
A:anyone interested in any artistic endeavor is capable of shutting down all the noise and concentrate on what is inside. it's very easy. actually, if you talk to my immediate family, i think that paying attention to the real world is harder to get me to do.

11/23/2008 18:52:29
Q:YOU DID BLADE AND HELLBOY, WHAT OTHER COMIC BOOK CHARACTER WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO?
A:i would have loved the chance to do try my hand at swamp thing.. jack kirby's demon and dr. strange and deadman...all the strange ones, all the weird ones, but i don't think they will be on my plate any time soon.

11/23/2008 18:53:14
Q:FAVORITE SCIFI FILM OF ALL TIME?
A:blade runner and 2001- a tie.

11/23/2008 18:53:42
Q:Do you think filming Hellboy II helped prepare you for filming the Hobbit?
A:Technically, yes- but that's not the challenge in THE HOBBIT. The challenge is to create and expand a massive universe and be as immersive as the Trilogy was. To approach Tolkien's book with the right mixture of reverence, enthusiasm and invention.

11/23/2008 18:54:33
Q:WILL THERE BE ANY COOL CREATURES IN HOBBIT LIKE HELLBOY2?
A:many many more and we will be pushing the goblin kindgom. we will be pushing smaug, the spiders of mirkwood. we will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and cgi into a seamless new art form in creating creatures, i think.

11/23/2008 18:55:14
Q:Do you plan to use any particular effects or techniques in the Hobbit that were used in Hellboy II?
A:Well, yes, but used in a different way. You will see some mind-boggling mixture of CGI / Puppetry like never before. The demarcation of where one technique ends and the other begins will NOT be as clean as in HBII or BLADE II or PAN'S LABYRINTH. I am going to push further than ever on both fronts.

11/23/2008 18:56:03
Q:WHEN DOES FILMING FOR THE HOBBIT BEGIN?
A:it will begin in 2010 and we will shoot for about 370 days or so...

11/23/2008 18:56:34
Q:WOULD YOU LIKE TO DIRECT AN ANIMATED FILM?
A:yes. very much so. i think that the beauty of being able to control every aspect of the video and audio universe in the film is something i look forward to in the future.

11/23/2008 18:58:21
Q:How long did the special effects and final editing take to make the final film?
A:The advantage of this is that the film is very fast to assemble. THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE was edited in about 4/6 weeks after wrap, I believe and we had a 'first Assembly' of HBII in approximately the same period.

11/23/2008 18:59:33
Q:WHAT WAS THE LAST GOOD MOVIE YOU SAW?
A:i loved the dark knight, even though it opened up 1 week after HB2 and evaporated our box office. but i thought it was a really great movie.

11/23/2008 19:00:57
Q:HB HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR...DID RON PERLMAN DO A LOT OF IMPROV DURING FILMING?
A:not really. both in hellboy 1 and hellboy 2, 90 to 98 percent of the lines that hellboy says are scripted lines, but i write them specifically for ron, cause i've known him for 17 years, and i know how he talks and the sense of humor he has, so hopefully they sound spontaneous.

11/23/2008 19:02:05
Q:EVER CONSIDER DOING A FILM MUSICAL?
A:no, not really
1
1/23/2008 19:02:57
Q:EVER CONSIDER DOING A FILM MUSICAL?
A:no, not really, but life is full of surprises... :)

11/23/2008 19:03:27
Q:If you had a choice, which do you prefer for complicated stunts - CGI or filming them practical?
A:ALWAYS practical. Digital doubles are almost perfect now, but the margin of error is VERY DEEP. It is easier to fake something we don't know (Monsters, Aliens, etc) than something we know, and the audience identifies something's fishy with a human figure by millions of vectors. (cont...)

/23/2008 19:04:16
Q:If you had a choice, which do you prefer for complicated stunts - CGI or filming them practical?
A:Having succeeded and failed in the past- I learned my lesson. Digital double must only be used as a last resource. Oh- and never in front of bright lights ;)

11/23/2008 19:04:59
Q:Is there a mythology behind elementals?
A:yes. there is. there's actually massive amounts of mythology that relates to elemental creatures in almost every folklore and civilization on earth. you can find it in asia, in tolkien, in classical fairytale lore. i think the imagination of elemental creatures is one of the first endeavors the human mind took into consideration, one of the first explorations and explanations of the natural world around us.

11/23/2008 19:06:41
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:Well, Either the ANGEL OF DEATH or the ELEMENTAL - wait- wait- or the TOOTH FAIRIES. Damn! I love them all!! lets talk about the elemental for a second. Originally, I wrote about a giant (very TROLLISH, not at all Fi-FO-FUM-ish in design) that came down from the clouds above via a beanstalk. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:07:30
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:The budget came back and it proved impossible. Mike and I spoke about maybe 'burning the tree' and having a creature emerge from inside, and finally we came to the most economical solution: the Elemental WAS the beanstalk itself. They were one and the same. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:08:17
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:I did a sketch or two that Francisco Ruiz and Mike then turned into dozens, if not hundreds of drawings (you can see my original sketch in the DVD and BLU-RAY) and I think Francisco almost went insane in solving its shape and particulars. Believe me, this was the most difficult one to design. I wanted it to be Magical, Beautiful and Majestic but also for it to feel like a threat. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:09:08
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:I tortured Francisco into sculpting it in clay and then I tortured the modelers, the animators and everyone along the way, but i think it is one of the most beautiful creatures in the film. The studio fought me every inch of the way into cutting it and I fought very hard for it. Many will not see the way the scene works. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:09:54
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:Many argued (and would still argue) that it seems not to move the plot forward, but for me it was an absolutely VITAL character point. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:11:03
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:The Elemental needed to be established both as Majestic and destructive to give Hellboy pause- a 'To Be Or Not To Be' moment in which a character that has learned -all of his life - to destroy monsters, hesitates to destroy the last of its race only to be met with typical human ingratitude.

11/23/2008 19:11:48
Q:I noticed that Hellboy drinks Tecate. Isn't he more of a Carta Blanca sort of guy?
A:He is, but i think tecate was the beer that worked very well into making it into the color pallette that we needed tor the scene. It wasi a beer from the north of mexico. it's very mexican. it is tecate light, because we had a joke in the screen play. he's a healthy golf club member. if we were getting drunk him and i, we would be drinking bohemia beer.

11/23/2008 19:12:50
Q:On and average week, how much time do you spend absorbing art and media (films, books, video games, etc.)?
A:it depends if my library is fully functional or that my books are orgarnized.. i go to the library after the girls go to school and i don't go home until 6pm. I spend 4 hours reading everyday. at night at the house, my wife and i try to catch up on a tv series or a movie. i wish i had more time for video games, i would love to be playing gears of war 2 right now.

11/23/2008 19:13:58
Q:What is the gooey substance in the floor in the toothfairy scene?
A:The gooey substance is supposed to be fairy poo. what we did was use a thickening agent called methocell. Methocell is usually used to thicken ice cream. we combined it with saw dust. It was incredibly slippery. so there was a lot of falling on my ass which is so ample i didn't break an ankle or cause any structural damage.

11/23/2008 19:15:05
Q:Will you still produce projects like you did with JA Bayona's The Orphanage?
A:yes. i am producing another first film for troy nixie who used to be a brilliant comic book artist. I'm co-producing with mark johnson and the movie will be shot next year. but again, it's a first film and I am hoping to continue producing first time directors for as long as i can.

11/23/2008 19:16:08
Q:Any followups similar to Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth in mind?
A:About a boy named saturn that brings about the end of the world. apocolyptic scene from his apartment. the end of the world, but through the eyes of an eight year old. This was like pan's labyrinth and devil's backbone when we finished them.

11/23/2008 19:17:16
Q:Where do all the different types of creatures come from? They are so different from one another
A:Well, one approach I took on HBII was to have ALL the designers present me with their 'dream designs' and select one of them and change it a bit so it would fit with the rest, but not too much, so it would retain its individuality. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:18:10
Q:Where do all the different types of creatures come from? They are so different from one another
A:As a result I gave each designer the control of that creature from start to finish. Much like in an animated movie (I can Spot a Glen Keane or Brad Bird or Takahata character in a few seconds). (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:19:09
Q:Where do all the different types of creatures come from? They are so different from one another
A:So each of them oversaw the sculpting, painting, dressing, hair work until the final result was on screen, and that gave the creatures a distinctive and passionate approach normally not seen on films other than animated ones.

11/23/2008 19:20:07
Q:At what age did you first read The Hobbit?
A:I believe it was between 10 years old and 11 years old. My first copy of it is dated as printed in 1973 and I know I bought it shortly after being published by a great publishing house called MINOTAURO which was (in my childhood years) like the CRITERION COLLECTION of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror.

11/23/2008 19:21:06
Q:How do you feel about 7.1 surround sound?
A:I love that it can be "scaled down" beautifully from theatrical to home and it can give you a great 360 fully immersive feel and with the Pro-Logic can be made relatively accessible for most users.

11/23/2008 19:21:54
Q:What can you recall as interesting during the filming of 'The Golden Army'?
A:Everything. We were out-gunned, under-budgeted and shooting against a release date. The margin of error was very slim or non-existent technically, so it was like running a military operation while piles of flying crap are being cannoned at you by insane monkeys. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:23:04
Q:What can you recall as interesting during the filming of 'The Golden Army'?
A:We didn't 'lock' the budget until we were a few weeks away from shooting. We had to re-design MAJOR sets and storyboard scenes on the fly and choreograph major fight scenes in the spur of the moment.

11/23/2008 19:23:58
Q:How did your vocal cameo in Quantum of Solace come about?
A:Alfonso is friends with the director and we were at hand - I guess- by being in London and in the same post-production facility, so- The great thing about it was to go home that night and tell my wife: "I just finished 'my scene' with Daniel Craig"

11/23/2008 19:25:12
Q:Will you ever do a special edition of Mimic?
A:We ARE doing it. The other day we watched parts of my cut for the first time in 10 years and I LOVED IT!! I had forgotten what a different movie it was. It will be released in a couple of years but we are indeed already on the way of doing a fabulous 'Director's Cut' that I can finally love!!! There's so much of that movie that I love and so little I hate - but I hate that 'little' very deeply.

11/23/2008 19:26:15
Q:Why did you replace Marco Beltrami with Danny Elfman for the second film?
A:the original decision to not use Marco came from the drive to find a UK-based composer, but once that was gone, I came to believe that the score for the second movie needed a different energy and direction than the first one. So the 'theme' of each film would be different from the next. Again, much like the Sinbad movies. Each adventure had a distinctive sound.

11/23/2008 19:27:15
Q:Do your family have input/influence the type of projects you Direct?
A:Every day as I finish the day and stop by the editing room, my daughter and my wife watch my assembled footage with me and tell me what they think: 'more of this-', 'Less of that-' and they also look at all the designs, sculptures, etc. as many times as I can. They are a massive support in my life.

11/23/2008 19:28:15
Q:Do you consider film as an art form or a form of entertainment?
A:i believe its both and it can be both. it can also be a matter of choosing one or the other, but for me its both. i think that actually some films can stand along any other work of art in my mind...certainly many of the classics. i think that is as valid for theater, ballet, painting, poetry, etc.

11/23/2008 19:29:08
Q:I'm not familiar with the Hellboy comics. How true to the ideas in the comics did you try to stay?
A:You MUST read the comics!! They are- in my opinion- some of the best the medium can offer. As said, HELLBOY (the first film) was more devoted in sticking to the comics origin and storyline. Nevertheless Kroenen is VERY different from the Kroenen in the Comics, Abe is very different, Liz and Hellboy are never in love in the comics, etc, etc

11/23/2008 19:29:46
Q:How long did it take to create the script for this movie?
A:About two years. I tried to keep the plot simple- lean and easy to follow and tried to concentrate in the 'baroque-ness' of the adventures and places our heroes visited and the creatures they met. As a kid (and as an adult) I worshipped the Harryhausen adventure films like the Sinbad films at which kept an easy to follow travelogue with amazing beasts and places. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:30:48
Q:How long did it take to create the script for this movie?
A:The script sprung from the same readings that gave birth to PAN'S LABYRINTH (namely Fairy Tale literature and analytical texts on the subject) and, curiously enough, tried very hard to be visually diffferent from all other big-budget Fantasy Films. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:31:29
Q:How long did it take to create the script for this movie?
A:We knew we couldn't out-LOTR the LOTR trilogy so we went for an Easter aesthetic mixed with vague Celtic motifs (The Prince's armour is very Japanese in Style as are the Princess gowns and the Troll Market is plagued by Arabic influence and Eastern European architecture) and a very bold -almost Circus-like- color palette in the light design, fight choreography, etc (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:32:14
Q:How long did it take to create the script for this movie?
A:For the record- neither Peter Jackson nor I had the faintest contact about the HOBBIT movies prior to the absolute completion of HELLBOY II. I got Peter's first call in December 2007- way after we wrapped the film. So, the visuals in the HOBBIT movie are not anticipated in the HBII movie.

11/23/2008 19:33:19
Q:Why is it so important to you that you support the home video market?
A:A) Because it is the final archival form of the film- most people will never see the movie again in a theatrical presentation, so it is our duty to give them the perfect home theatre experience. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:34:04
Q:Why is it so important to you that you support the home video market?
A:B) Because i try to make my DVD's and BLU-RAY's an 'all-access' educational glimpse into our filmmaking process. We try to keep it very candid and educational. Not just 'everything worked out' and 'we are all great' but we allow you to glimpse our tribulations, the way decisions are affected by budget or an FX that doesnt work, etc

11/23/2008 19:35:39
Q:Was Seth MacFarlane on set voicing Krauss? If not, who was?
A:On set, Johann was voiced by John Alexander and James Dodd as they both performed the role at different times (John played the legless Goblin too)

11/23/2008 19:36:20
Q:How long did the filming of the movie take?
A:Aproximately 132 days (4/5 days LESS than the first film) and once again, there was no Second Unit utilized.

1/23/2008 19:37:20
Q:What was your most rewarding moment when making Hellboy II?
A:Three moments: THE ELEMENTAL, THE TROLL MARKET and the Johann ADR sessions with Seth MacFarlane. In all three instances I was floored by seeing something that lived in my brain for so long, finally being 'complete' and realized. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:38:20
Q:What was your most rewarding moment when making Hellboy II?
A:The TROLL MARKET, much like THE ELEMENTAL had many people against it. Mainly because they were expensive scenes that were debated in terms of PLOT but that I argued were needed for DRAMA and CHARACTER (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:39:11
Q:What was your most rewarding moment when making Hellboy II?
A:Hellboy -and the audience- must be wowed into the TROLL MARKET ('You should see this!!' he says to liz) because the tide will turn him from Monster-hater to quitting the BPRD he must realize the awesome, unique nature of Monsters in order to enact the change, to learn NOT to destroy ('I win, you live...' he says to Nuada, quite a reversal)

11/23/2008 19:40:10
Q:How long did it take to transform Ron Perlman into Hellboy before shooting?
A:Just the face and hands 4 hours, full-body 6 / 7 hours. Less if he didn't sing that much and smoke cigars or walk his dog around the catering tent in half make-up.

11/23/2008 19:40:47
Q:What film will you be doing after The Hobbit?
A:I dont know- life always surprises me- especially when I answer assertively one of these questions ;)

11/23/2008 19:41:27
Q:How did you find yourself becoming interested in film making?
A:When I was a child, my father bought a super-8 camera and projector, and I started doing amateur movies at age 8. I didn't know it was called directing or that one could make a living off of it. I just started directing and did a few super 8 films. It all grew from there-

11/23/2008 19:42:14
Q:How do you use constructive criticism from the cast/crew when bringing your vision to the screen?
A:Well- to be absolutely honest I am pretty prickly about things. I am pretty stubborn about the way things should be- I wish I was a better person, but I bristle rapidly at first. A few minutes later, if the thought sticks, I consider it seriously and act on it. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:42:51
Q:How do you use constructive criticism from the cast/crew when bringing your vision to the screen?
A:I have no problem standing in front of a crew and apologizing for having screwed something up and ask them to do it again, differently; but it must be well-observed. If anyone in the crew 'chimes in' carelessly, I am not all too kind about it. I encourage well-thought opinion, but I am impatient with casual observations.

11/23/2008 19:43:33
Q:Will you be working with Guillermo Navarro on The Hobbit?
A:I hope so!!

11/23/2008 19:44:04
Q:What was the hardest thing of creating Hellboy 2?
A:Delivering the spectacle of a SUMMER FILM on a budget about half (85 million) than the films surrounding us that season and then keeping the 'little character' quirks in perspective with the big action scenes. Oh- and- keeping it truly free and insane (it is a VERY strange Summer movie)

11/23/2008 19:44:52
Q:What is the coolest feature you have seen on a Blu-ray movie?
A:Ahem- our very own Schufften Glasses View!!

11/23/2008 19:45:18
Q:Is Hellboy (Ron) cranky in real life, as well?
A:The answer will be 'Yes' but I still love the rascal because he is also adorable and loyal and a delightful raconteur. And, by the way, I was ultra cranky when we shot HBII.

11/23/2008 19:45:49
Q:You seem to lean towards making fantastical films. Is this your favorite genre?
A:I love making movies with weird elements on them. And I love having monsters in my call-sheet, but the day may come when I do a movie where the fantastical is harder to pinpoint. I love Lynch and I would say his films are full of invention and madness, but the element which makes them slant towards the symbolic / fantastic is insidiously hard to discern.

11/23/2008 19:46:36
Q:DO YOU CHOOSE THE ACTORS WHO DO THE VOICES IN SPANISH ON HELLBOY II?
A:I did to a point. I thought the first movie was dubbed the wrong way in Mexico and Spain so I had some input but not on every voice, just the main ones.

11/23/2008 19:47:23
Q:Do you view DVD/Blu-ray extras as a chance to give fans deeper insight into your project, or is it just more work?
A:I think that it is a VERY DIFFERENt, much more immersive medium but we are JUST BARELy starting to explore it. Most Blu-ray discs are a pain to navigate and don't use the storage advantages in a good way. HBII was designed for Blu-Ray. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:48:06
Q:Do you view DVD/Blu-ray extras as a chance to give fans deeper insight into your project, or is it just more work?
A:I am privileged to have Javier Soto as a partner in my ventures and he is as obsessive as I am about this. Check our HELLBOY DVD's and PAN'S LABYRINTH Blu-Ray for more explorations of both formats. But YES- I think Blu-ray is a blessing to be explored to its limit!!

11/23/2008 19:48:43
Q:Do you believe that all this interactivity supports your movie or distracts the viewer?
A:Well- the interaction is a voluntary act from both consenting parts so, I dont think its a distraction. There are to types of film lover: the one that just wants the movie and the one that wants to know it all. I believe I cater to both (or none if they hate what I do).

11/23/2008 19:49:37
Q:After the first film, what did you do to make the sequel even better than the first? In your opinion?
A:Well, I enjoyed it creatively much more- Shooting was miserable but creatively great. If you think it is better (as do I) then the more fantastic elements and the fulfillment of the promise of a 'monster movie' (a Western Kaiju) are amongst the chief reasons.

11/23/2008 19:50:16
Q:Does Mike Mignola have any involvement with you on The Hobbit?
A:I hope and pray he joins us at the design stage for a week or two.

11/23/2008 19:50:44
Q:Who are your top choices to play Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit Movies?
A:Hopefully, very soon we can reveal that-

11/23/2008 19:51:03
Q:What was your initial familiarity with the Hellboy character? Were you a fan before being approached to direct?
A:For years I had followed Mike Mignola's ascent through the ranks. I was a follower during his 'World Of Krypton' years and his DC period in general and loved his Fafhrd and Gray Mouser series (I love the books) and followed him through 'Gotham by Gaslight' and the 'Hellraiser' stint right into becoming the Mike we all know today. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:51:46
Q:What was your initial familiarity with the Hellboy character? Were you a fan before being approached to direct?
A:And I was not approached to direct- I went after the project like a Fat Mexican Missile of Joy!! I begged, cried and threw myself at it-!!

11/23/2008 19:52:18
Q:What is your favorite creature in Hellboy 2 and what inspired it's creation?
A:Then Mike Mignola fought me like crazy and asked me to make it a tree monster, more like a Kirby-esque elemental creature. We designed it like that- a shape-shifting tree creature that covered the whole city in plants as it moved around, like a living vine. (cont...)

11/23/2008 19:52:47
Q:What scene took the longest to film and how long was it?
A:I believe the elemental scene took a couple of weeks and was the longest along with the TROLL MARKET and GOLDEN ARMY scene.

11/23/2008 19:53:11
Q:Where do you draw inspiration for all these amazing creatures that are in your movies?
A:I urged everyone to NOT look into other movie monsters or comics and to look into engravings, old illustrations and fine painters of the Fantastique (BOCKLIN, REDON, ROPS, SCHWABE, etc) for inspiration. And then to look in nature (you can find great monsters in the pages of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC) and biology pictures.

11/23/2008 19:54:15
Q:Thanks, Guillermo.
A:Thank you for joining us. Thank you for acquiring hellboy 2 In the blu-ray form which we absolutely adore. So goodbye from new zealand.

11/23/2008 19:54:45
Q:Where can i get a transcript of this?
A:For a complete transcript, go to www.universalhidef.com.

Summit Announces TWILIGHT Sequel, NEW MOON!

Considering the massive success of TWILIGHT this weekend, on top of the announcement that Summit Entertainment have optioned the remaining 3 books in the TWILIGHT saga, it comes as no surprise that the production company has officially confirmed NEW MOON has been greenlit. Variety reports, "Summit made the widely expected announcement Saturday morning. "Twilight" generated first-day grosses of $35.7 million from 3,419 playdates on Friday -- including $7 million from Thursday midnight shows.

The vampire thriller's a ready-made franchise for Summit with four books in Stephenie Meyer’s series, which have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide. "New Moon" is the second title in the series and is centered on Edward Cullen leaving Bella Swan in order to keep her safe from other vampires. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart play the leads in the film.

"I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment," Meyer said in a statement. "Twilight" had been expected to open in the $50 million to $60 million range, although it looks likely to end up above that."

Timothy Olyphant Cast In THE CRAZIES Remake!

"Timothy Olyphant has signed on to star in "THE CRAZIES," Overture's remake of the George Romero horror movie being directed by Breck Eisner" says The Hollywood Reporter. The article continues, "The story revolves around the inhabitants of a small Kansas town who are beset by death and insanity after a plane crash lets loose a secret biological weapon into the water supply. Olyphant is playing the town's sheriff. Scott Kosar and Ray Wright wrote the screenplay."

Olyphant is no stranger to the genre having appeared in SCREAM 2, DREAMCATCHER, as well as non-genre fare like HBO's DEADWOOD, LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD and HITMAN. Should be interesting to see how Eisner interprets the story from Romero's original film.

A release date for THE CRAZIES is tentatively set for September 25th, 2009! More when we hear it!

WOLFMAN Delayed?

FANGORIA is reporting that Universal's upcoming remake of THE WOLFMAN may be moving out of it's proposed April 3rd, 2009 release slot to a Fall 2009 release date instead. No confirmation on any of this yet, but maybe Universal is thinking a Halloween release is more fitting? (Or maybe the film just needs a bit more work.) Whatever the case, we're all going to have to wait just a tad bit longer before seeing Benicio Del Toro transform into a lycanthrope.

The new update of the classic Universal monster is being helmed by director Joe Johnston from a script by Andrew Kevin Walker (SE7EN) & David Self and stars Benicio Del Toro (SIN CITY), Anthony Hopkins (THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS), Emily Blunt (WIND CHILL) & Hugo Weaving (V FOR VENDETTA). Rick Baker provides the make-up FX for the new WOLF MAN! Check out Mezco's WOLFMAN action figure right HERE!

I AM LEGEND Writer Tackles Spielberg/Smith Remake Of OLDBOY!

Hmm... So, The Hollywood Reporter says that I AM LEGEND "co-writer Mark Protosevich is in early talks to pen the remake of "OLDBOY" that boxoffice king and "Legend" star Will Smith is developing with director Steven Spielberg." The article continues, "DreamWorks secured the remake rights from Mandate Pictures, which also is staying involved in the project. Although the studio was meeting with several high-profile writers to do the adaptation, Smith invited Protosevich to meet with Spielberg on the project."

Ironically enough I just watched I AM LEGEND for the first time, and thought it was OK. (Minus the CGI on the creatures.) I'm just nervous about such high profile celebrities tackling a remake of one of my favorite foreign movies. Will they keep the controversion ending in tact? They'd BETTER!

Seek out the original 2003 film by Park Chan-wook in the meantime.

Our original post announcing Spielberg and Smith's involvement right HERE!

Director Set For American Remake Of THE HOST!

Variety reports, "Universal Pictures and Gore Verbinski will remake the 2006 Bong Joon-ho-directed Korean thriller "THE HOST," with commercials director Fredrik Bond making his feature helming debut and Mark Poirier ("Smart People") to pen the script." The article continues, "The story follows a town terrorized by a giant mutant squidlike creature hatched by toxins that flow into a nearby river from a military base. When the creature grabs a little girl, her dysfunctional family must band together to rescue her. Verbinski (best known for directing the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN movies, as well as the American remake of THE RING) will produce with Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison, along with Paul Brooks. The film, originally titled "Gwoemul," did record-breaking business in its theatrical run in South Korea.

Bond has directed campaigns for Nike, Adidas and Levi's. He and Verbinski had been looking for a project to do together, and Bond said he embraced the opportunity to mix a larger-than-life monster with a heartfelt family drama. "It processes a few genres together, and visually it feels close to the stuff I've made over the last few years in commercials, the tonality of humor and the scale," Bond said.

That's actually quite true. Slashfilm.com has a great article showcasing several of director Bond's commercials, and judging from these, I think he can easily capture the tone and look of the original THE HOST. Chick HERE to check out those commercials. Count me optimistic.

New TREMORS Movie? THE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER?

Cinemablend.com is reporting that Universal may be resurrecting their TREMORS franchise. The original hit theaters back in 1990 and stared Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Michael Gross, Reba McEntire. It spawned 3 more sequels, all of which Gross returned for and now it looks like the studio is contemplating a 5th entry. Insiders told Cinemablend the proposed title would be TREMORS: THE THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER and that it'd take place in Australia. (Naturally.)

Shock Till You Drop confirmed earlier this evening that it is being aimed for the Direct To DVD market. (TREMORS 4: THE LEGEND BEGINS was actually a Direct To DVD movie as well.) I recently picked up the "TREMORS ATTACK PACK" which features all 4 movies, so I'm game for another one. We'll let you know more when we hear it!

SHOCK N ROLL ISSUE 4 - "IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKINHEAD, GARY GERANI!"

Just added! SHOCK N ROLL ISSUE 4 is a FRIGHT exclusive interview with PUMPKINHEAD writer GARY GERANI! Check out Tim Sullivan's introduction below, and click the frame or image below to read the extensive interview in it's entirety!

Chances are, you’ve crossed paths with Gary Gerani and never knew it. You’ve watched his movies. Owned his books. Read his magazine articles. Collected his bubble gum cards. If you consider yourself a Monster Kid and came of age in the 70’s and 80’s, then Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids, Dinosaurs Attack, The Monster Times, Fantastic Television and Starlog are all familiar friends that elicit warm, nostalgic memories. Gary had a hand in writing them all. And did I mention PUMPKINHEAD? That iconic 80’s creature feature that even the new monster kids on the block know and love? Gary wrote that one, too.

He’s been called the Card King as well as the King of Pop Culture. A guy whose unyielding love of the realms of fantasy has found him both preserving legacies as well as creating them. As a ten year old I read the advice column he wrote in The Monster Times under the moniker Big G- both G for Gerani and G for Godzilla, the giant lizard supposedly penning those helpful hints (Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone it was actually Gary!). As a teen I stuck Gerani designed Wacky Paks all over my High School gym locker (my fave being Slaytex Living Gloves), then in college studied his articles in Starlog with religious zeal.

The real treat came in 1988 with the release of PUMPKINHEAD, a welcome return to old school monster movies in a genre oversaturated with unimaginative slasher sequels. PUMPKINHEAD never made it to my local theater thanks to poor distribution, but he became an eternal presence on my VCR where I discovered him like buried treasure, and 20 years later, he himself sits on my bathroom window in plastic Todd McFarlane effigy.

More importantly, the man behind these rites of passage has become my cherished mentor and deeply adored friend.

My personal path with Gary crossed back in 1996 when I was working at new Line Cinema analyzing scripts for Mike DeLuca. A script he had written called VAMPIRELLA made its way onto my desk, and I was blown away by its merits. I wrote up these merits in a very gushing “reader report”, a love letter that, alas, was not good enough to result in the script being bought by New Line, but did result in Gary Gerani contacting me to say Thanks.

Thus began the beginning of a beautiful friendship, as they say, a friendship forged by two guys whose love of the movies, particularly monster movies, has provided the fodder for endless dinners at Jerry’s Deli in Sherman Oaks, California; dinners where Gary and I can be found once or twice a month engaged in animated conversations all things genre. I love yielding myself to his reveries on the days of monsterdom a bit before my time, and it’s often hard for me to believe that my awesome buddy is the same guy who created all those wonderful benchmarks of my own youth. This industry we work and play in can both be very rewarding and demeaning. Failure does walk hand in hand with success on Hollywood Boulevard. But as long as I have my “Geek Out” sessions with Gary Gerani to look forward to, I know I’m not alone.

I usually get the Roast Beef on rye with a side of Russian dressing. For Gary, it’s the turkey dinner with double mashed. Feel free to join us. Order whatever you want. The geeking’s about to begin….. -Tim Sullivan (11/12/08)

JSYN'S TOP 10 SPECIAL FX MOVIES!

JSYN’S TEN FAVORITE SPECIAL MAKEUP EFFECTS MOVIES:

Hey gang,

Robg asked me to compile a list of a few of my favorite movies featuring some of the most jaw-dropping special makeup effects around. Please keep in mind that not all of these will be horror movies per se, but if you dig the craftsmanship of transformation through makeup, this list is a good place to start.

I am aware that I’m omitting some very important and well know work by some very important and well know makeup artists, but these are just some of my personal favorites that sparked my interest and influenced my pursuit of special makeup effects. There really are too many talented artists and great films to mention in one list, and I’ll try to cover as many as I can later in another list (or three).

Also, I want to stress that for the most part I’ve tried to give proper credit where credit is due, and while one effects artist is usually credited overall for a film, there is always a team of others who were also associated with and contributed to the project. It really does take a village, people.

Some titles below, do in fact utilize minimal CGI enhancement, but for the most part everything you see on screen was fabricated with raw materials and human hands. And in film making today, CGI enhancement, if used properly, is just another tool in a special makeup effects artist’s kit. Let’s get into it, shall we?

1) The Thing: Rob Bottin

Twenty-something years later and I am still in awe of the level of craftsmanship and creativity in this movie. I honestly watch at least parts of this movie almost weekly, and now that the blu-ray is out I have a renewed level of respect for the wholly original, batshit bonkers work Bottin and his entire creative team loosed upon an unsuspecting genre. I also have the greatest respect for John Carpenter for giving Bottin free reign to get down with his bad self. Not many directors have the nuts to do something like that.

2) The Fly: Chris Walas

Another remake, from a time when it wasn’t a dirty word. Cronenberg, unlike Carpenter on The Thing, had his hands all over the core ideas of metamorphosis and transformation, but it was the fevered imagination and talent of guys like Chris Walas and Stephan DuPuis who turned Jeff Goldblum into a sympathetic, revolting beast. Walas kicked so much ass on The Fly; he actually got to direct The Fly II, which is another great example of his excellent skills.

3) Hellraiser: Bob Keen

Clive Barker turned to fellow Brit Bob Keen to bring the horrid Cenobites to life, as well as the skinless and re-generating Uncle Frank, which required hours of makeup in different stages of decay, puppetry and pretty much the kitchen sink thrown in for good measure. And then there’s the blood… gallons of that wonderful, unique shade of red that was pitch perfect for the film. Bob Keen also supplied the atrocities of Event Horizon, which you need a region 2 DVD and remote with frame-advance to truly appreciate.

4) The Blob: Tony Gardner, Lyle Conway

Yet another freaking awesome remake that features excellent gags which still hold up to this day. One of the few mysteries to me as a fellow artist was exactly how they made that Blob! I’ve heard all kinds of explanations but the thing looks so damn good, It’s really a testament to those behind the collective elements of the spfx, cinematography and lighting all working together to make magic happen. The scene where Shawnee Smith’s boyfriend is being attacked/absorbed/dragged out of the hospital window is a marvelous example of that movie magic. However the hell the Blob was actually made, it’s more than effective; it quite frankly sells the premise of the whole movie. Lyle Conway was also responsible for another utterly amazing movie monster, Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, which I also recommend if you want to see how things were done way before CGI.

5) Amadeus/The Exorcist: Dick Smith

Of all the wonderful makeups of Dick Smith’s incredible career, his Old Salieri makeup on F. Murray Abraham is one of my favorites because I love how the actor performs with the makeup, which is absolutely flawless itself. The two working together that harmoniously is like capturing lighting in a bottle on screen. I would also be remiss if I did not talk about the age makeup work he did on Max Von Sydow for The Exorcist. Actually, I can’t really even find the words to properly pay homage to this absolutely incredible cosmetic transformation. Most people don’t even realize a young Von Sydow is wearing full age makeup in The Exorcist, which is a true testament to an artists’ talent. They don’t call Dick the greatest living makeup artist in the world for nothing.

6) Blade 2: Steve Johnson

When I was growing up as a teen practicing makeup on my buddies in my makeshift workshop in my basement, the two “young guns” of makeup I admired most were Kevin Yeager (famous for his Freddy Krueger makeup) and Steve Johnson. These cats, along with lunatics like Screaming Mad George used to blow my mind with all the crazy things they would introduce into makeup. They bent and broke the rules, were VERY ahead of their time, and seemed to make a personal goal of topping themselves on whatever project they did prior. And this was in the Eighties! Fast forward about ten years and Steve Johnson’s studio teams up with then respected but not exactly well-know director Guillermo Del Toro for the sequel to Blade. Guillermo, it seems, is just as crazy as Steve, and remembering all the bonkers work he did in the Eighties, hires his crew to supply all kinds of vampiric creature craziness for Blade II. And boy howdy, does he! I encourage all special makeup enthusiasts to buy the Special Edition 2-disc DVD of Blade II and just watch Disc 2 over and over. It’s really incredible, advanced work that needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. From what I understand, sometime after this film Steve Johnson left the biz and members of his old team took over as Quantum Creations, an excellent outfit in their own right.

7) Day of the Dead: Tom Savini

Tom Savini was a 100% direct influence on me wanting to become a special makeup artist. His book Grande Illusions was like a Bible to me, and I watched Scream Greats Vol. 1 on vhs so many times I could recite entire passages verbatim. It’s hard to pick just one movie that really defines his career, but I feel the work he did on “Day of the Dead” was definitely a high water mark. First of all, the sheer volume of work supplied for the zombie makeups is astounding. The scene where the zombies finally bust through the gate and into the underground bunker was epic in scope. These weren’t the simple but effective greenish zombies of “Dawn”, these were hundreds of ugly, rotted, nasty prosthetics-heavy extras that all needed to be addressed. And then there was the gore. I mean really, have you ever seen gory money shots handled more perfectly since? It was such an exquisite horror, a beautiful ugliness that has been seared into my psyche forever, one would be hard pressed to capture such a perfect balance of art, realism and craftsmanship in the realm of gore again. Bravo Savini!

8) Robocop/Total Recall: Rob Bottin

Rob Bottin was really on fire with these two films from director Paul Verhoven. The Robo-Suit alone was a complicated, intricate design unlike anything audiences have seen before. He also brought violence to the screen with such a juicy fury, it was years before viewers got to see the extended, unedited scenes (like Murphy’s death and the over-the-top attack on the unfortunate corporate victim of ED-209) on Criterion Edition DVD.

Total Recall, while not as strong a film as Robocop, featured some of Bottin’s most creative, innovative gags. Most notably, the scene with the automated segmented “fat lady” mask that an uncanny likeness puppet version of Arnold removes from his (it’s?) head is the special effects equivalent of an enigma wrapped in a riddle inside a puzzle.

9) An American Werewolf in London: Rick Baker

Definitely one of the defining touchstones of modern makeup effects, there is not much I can say about Rick Baker’s work that hasn’t been said already. The famous transformation scene was brilliantly designed, fabricated, applied, lit, shot, edited and executed. It’s truly a sublime moment in makeup effects and film making in general.

10) Hellboy/Hellboy 2: The Golden Army/Pan’s Labyrinth: Rick Baker, Spectral Motion, DDT Effectos Especial, and many more!

I’m combining these three films into one entry because many of the artists overlap from film to film and also because the real driving force behind these masterpieces of the modern monster movie is director Guillermo Del Toro, who was once a special makeup artist himself! Rick Baker, his crew and other collaborators created and designed Hellboy’s makeup in the first film, while the geniuses at Spectral Motion handled the magnificent Sammael creature and DDT designed all the complex elements for the Kronen character. Later, in Hellboy 2, Del Toro once again called in Spectral Motion, this time to handle most of the work load including tweaking Hellboy’s design, rethinking Abe Sapien’s look and application, as well as churning out a rogue’s gallery of creatures not seen since the Cantina scene in Star Wars. DDT earned a well-deserved Academy Award for their brilliant work on Pan’s Labyrinth and also contributed the “Young Hellboy” makeup for Hellboy 2. DDT artist Montse Ribe even played the role of young Hellboy herself!

TWILIGHT Sequels Announced!

Considering the soundtrack just went to number 1 earlier this week, and the fact that every Hot Topic in-store appearance has been mobbed beyond capacity, it comes as no surprise that Summit Entertainment has announced they've optioned the rights to make movies of all the TWILIGHT novels.

The Hollywood Reporter says, "The company has acquired rights to the next three novels in Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster vampire series and has hired "TWILIGHT" scribe Melissa Rosenberg to pen scripts based on "NEW MOON" and "ECLIPSE," the second and third books, respectively. A fourth book, "BREAKING DAWN," has not attached a writer." (Considering the general disappointment from critics and fans alike to the 4th book, perhaps the producers are thinking of doing something different for the 4th chapter?)

The article continues, ""TWILIGHT," which revolves around the relationship between an average teenage girl, Bella, and a vampire, Edward, in a rainy Northwest town, has been generating huge buzz ahead of its Nov. 21 bow. In "NEW MOON," Edward leaves Bella, sending Bella into a depression and a friendship with another vampire. In the third book, "ECLIPSE," that relationship triangle evolves, while evil empires begin to pursue Bella. "BREAKING DAWN" pushes the plot further with a marriage between Bella and Edward."

Based on the hit novel series by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene, Billy Burke, Nikki Reed, Cam Cigandet, Kellan Lutz, Anna Kendrick and Taylor Lautner. It opens next Friday November 21st.

Bond Director MARC FORSTER Helming WORLD WAR Z!

Variety reports that Paramount has set "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster to helm "WORLD WAR Z," based on the Max Brooks bestselling novel about a worldwide infestation of flesh-eating zombies. "Changeling" scribe J. Michael Straczynski (BABYLON 5) is writing the screenplay, and Brad Pitt's Plan B is producing.

Brooks -- the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft -- wrote a detailed tale in which a researcher for the U.N. Postwar Commission interviews survivors from countries all over the world, 10 years after the crisis, to gather a first-person post-mortem on a war that obliterated every country on the map. Forster is unlikely to return for another James Bond installment. As for "WWZ," "The genre always fascinated me, and when they pitched it to me, it reminded me of the paranoid conspiracy films of the '70s like 'All the President's Men,' " Forster told Daily Variety.

CLINT EASTWOOD Directing The Supernatural Thriller 'HEREAFTER'!

"Clint Eastwood is in talks to direct the supernatural thriller "HEREAFTER" for DreamWorks," says Variety. Led by principals Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider, picked up the spec penned by "Frost/Nixon" scribe Peter Morgan in March when it was still a part of Paramount Pictures. DreamWorks held onto the project as part of its separation pact with the Melrose studio and has been wooing Eastwood to board the project for months. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it is described as in the vein of "The Sixth Sense." Kathleen Kennedy is producing. Eastwood, who has two films in awards season contention this year -- "The Changeling" and "Gran Torino" -- previously worked with Spielberg on "Flags of Our Fathers" and "Letters From Iwo Jima," both of which Spielberg produced.

Eastwood does have an early history in horror. His acting debut was as an uncredited "lab technician" in REVENGE OF THE CREATURE, THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON sequel. He also directed PLAY MISTY FOR ME!

Hot Topic CEO Apologizes For 2nd TWILIGHT Signing Disaster

Another Robert Pattinson signing, another angry mob. In an attempt to avoid the near riot at a mall in San Francisco earlier this week, Hot Topic and mall management decided to hand out wristbands to meet the TWILIGHT star early after 700 fans had shown up by 1AM in the morning. Original plans were to allow wristband sales to begin at 7:30am. Hot Topic CEO Betsy McLaughlin explains in an apology:

"To all of the supporters of Hot Topic and fans of TWILIGHT:

Although no explanation will correct the situation that occurred in Chicago today at the Orland Square Mall, I wanted to attempt to explain what happened from our point of view.

We do many signings all over the country with large crowds so we have processes and systems in place to ensure a smooth experience for our customers. The mall developer was a partner in the planning; however, as of two days ago, they told us they would not allow any fans to line up prior to 6AM. They required them to be off the premises.

On Monday at 6AM at the San Francisco event, the fans became disorderly and stormed the mall entrance. Mall security, numerous police, fire officials and our team from HT stepped in to calm the crowd and create a safe environment for the fans. The event was revised and went forward with the exception of the planned Q&A.

Monday’s event caused all of us to re-group and review the process. Allowing a “mob” to develop was dangerous and frankly, not an option. The mall developer (GGP) consented to allowing an orderly line to form prior to 6AM outside of the remainder of the malls on the tour. When our crew arrived yesterday at midnight, approximately 500 people were already lined up to purchase tickets. By 1AM, there were 700 people in line. It was about 30 degrees and raining. We had to make a call. We knew the first 500 would get wristbands and felt it was the right call to allow those waiting beyond 500 to go home and avoid the cold, wet weather for the remainder of the morning. Given the demand, anyone arriving after midnight would have been too late to obtain a wristband.

We understand your frustration and anger, but from our standpoint, we had no choice but to change the rules after Monday’s event. We knew some would feel it unfair as they were told one thing and when arriving on the scene, something else was reality. But given the choice of risking a disorderly crowd, a dangerous situation and canceling of the event, we made a decision that we felt was the right thing to do. I support our team and the mall for making safety and, given the weather, health the priorities.
...
We sincerely apologize and hope that the facts help you to better understand the situation.

Betsy McLaughlin
CEO, Hot Topic"

Based on the hit novel series by Stephenie Meyer, TWILIGHT was directed by Catherine Hardwicke and stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Jackson Rathbone, Edi Gathegi, Rachelle Lefevre, Ashley Greene, Billy Burke, Nikki Reed, Cam Cigandet, Kellan Lutz, Anna Kendrick and Taylor Lautner. ADAM GREEN To Write & Direct FROZEN!

We just received a press release announcing that filmmaker Adam Green (SPIRAL, HATCHET) will be writing & directing FROZEN, a high-concept thriller for Peter Block's "A Bigger Boat" production company.  Read ahead for ALL the details:

A BIGGER BOAT LAUNCHES FROZEN AT THE AMERICAN FILM MARKET

SANTA MONICA, CA (November 11, 2008) Peter Block’s A Bigger Boat announced today that it has greenlit the chilling thriller FROZEN, written and to be directed by Adam Green (HATCHET, SPIRAL). The company will produce the picture with Green’s ArieScope Pictures.

GreeneStreet Films International (GSFI) is selling the film worldwide and has already closed deals at the American Film Market with the United Kingdom’s Momentum, Spain’s Aurum, France’s Metropolitan, the Middle East’s ECS, Brazil’s Playarte, Israel’s United King, Scandinavia’s Svensk, and Turkey’s Medyavizyon.

The story revolves around three skiers who are stranded on a chairlift and forced to make life or death choices that prove more dangerous than even freezing to death.

"FROZEN is the perfect first project for A Bigger Boat," said Peter Block. "A high concept thriller with a talented young filmmaker on board. HATCHET proved that Adam can direct fun horror comedy and attract an audience but this project will show his ability to create a realistic, tension filled thriller. I couldn’t be more excited to work with him and his team at ArieScope."

"Anyone who has skied before knows the fear that rushes through their heart when the chairlift momentarily stops," said Adam Green. "FROZEN will build on such primal fears as 'heights' and 'freezing to death' and take them to terrifying new levels. It's an honor to be working with GSFI and Peter Block, a producer who truly gets the horror genre and who knows how to do it right."

ArieScope's Cory Neal added "To have FROZEN be the flagship production for A Bigger Boat has us excited beyond words."

"The response to Adam and FROZEN has been overwhelming," said GSFI president, Amy Beecroft. "It shows that when you have a strong concept and people who know how to deliver this particular genre, there's a marketplace. This has been a great way to launch A Bigger Boat's partnership with GreeneStreet Films International."

Principal photography is scheduled to commence early next year and casting is already underway. Green is represented by Endeavor Talent Agency and Industry Entertainment.

ABOUT PETER BLOCK/A BIGGER BOAT
A Bigger Boat runs in partnership with GreeneStreet Films and has a domestic distribution deal with Overture Films and Alliance Films. Under Block’s leadership, Lionsgate acquired or produced over 1,000 films including the box office sensations CRASH, SAW, OPEN WATER, FAHRENHEIT 9/11, as well as such art-house hits as THE COOLER, LANTANA and SECRETARY. Block spearheaded the company’s foray into theatrical genre pictures with the acquisition of CABIN FEVER, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, HARD CANDY, and HOSTEL, as well as expanding the genre's international focus with Neil Marshall's DESCENT, Peter Jackson's DEAD ALIVE, Guillermo del Toro's CRONOS, Takashi Shimizu's JU-ON: THE GRUDGE, Alex Aja's HIGH TENSION, and UNDEAD from Australia's Spierig brothers. In addition, Block was the primary production executive on the Academy nominated GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, the Bobby Darin bio-pic BEYOND THE SEA directed and starring Kevin Spacey, NARC, Rob Zombie's DEVIL'S REJECTS, and the surprise hit CRANK.

GREENESTREET INTERNATIONAL
GreeneStreet Films International (GSFI) is the international sales company under the GreeneStreet Films banner. GSFI launched six years ago to expand GreeneStreet’s domestic presence overseas through its foreign sales of GreeneStreet’s titles, as well as third party acquisitions. Producer Talks MY NAME IS BRUCE 2?!

Shock Till You Drop's Ryan Rotten caught up with Dark House Entertainment's Mike Richardson, the producer on the currently touring Bruce Campbell flick MY NAME IS BRUCE and was very optimistic for a sequel given the film's performance thus far. The tour kicked off in New York City on Halloween night with Campbell presenting and fielding questions for a Q & A session after each screening and has been a success thus far. If this keeps up, the pair would love to tackle a MY NAME IS BRUCE 2.

Richardson told SHOCK, "We have an idea where [Bruce] is going to visit a country in Europe and he thinks he's got an all-expense-paid stay there. They put him up in a big castle and he thinks there are groupies running around, but they're not really groupies, they're minions. It's Bruce and he's going to play the same clueless character." Read more on the sequel at SHOCK's original post HERE, including the producer's plans for Ted Raimi in the follow-up.

Written by Mark Verheiden, produced by Mike Richardson and directed by Bruce Campbell, MY NAME IS BRUCE stars Bruce Campbell, (the gorgeous) Grace Thorsen, Ted Raimi, Ellen Sandweiss, Danny Hicks, Tim Quill, Michael Kallio, Adam Boyd and Dani Kelly.

Guillermo Del Toro's CRONOS Getting Special Edition Blu-Ray Treatment?!

Shock Till You Drop's Ryan Rotten caught up with filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro at the HELLBOY 2 DVD release party and the director revealed that CRONOS, one of his earliest efforts will be getting the "special edition" Blu-Ray treatment shortly!

He told Shock, "I believe that very, very, very soon we're going to be announcing a very special Blu-ray edition of CRONOS. When you know who is doing it and how we're doing it, it will be more exciting. I cannot announce it properly, but it's very exciting for me because it's one of those movies that I think I want to revisit, re-time, restructure the sound for the Blu-ray experience in a big way."

When asked about the supplemental material, it sounds like plans are to incorporate all the features for all the worldwide DVD releases. "We're going to do, basically, the most exhausting extras that can ever be put together. There are many editions around the world with different extras, but there is no definitive edition."

Read the original post on SHOCK's site right HERE! You can read Del Toro's thoughts on SPLICE and HATER at SHOCK's other article with the director right HERE! More when we hear it!

MGM Movies On You Tube?!

Wow. This is pretty huge news. According to Reuters, MGM has struck a deal with You Tube to showcase both film and television titles from their library on the video-sharing site. The article reads, "YouTube, the largest video-sharing website, will show full-length television shows and films from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's archives in its latest step to boost advertising revenue by adding professional programing, the company told Reuters on Sunday."

"The site, owned by Google Inc, plans to make the announcement about the new partnership on Monday. MGM Studios will kick off the partnership by posting episodes of its decade-old "American Gladiators" program to YouTube on one channel."

"On another channel, MGM will post full-length action films like "Bulletproof Monk" and "The Magnificent Seven" and clips from popular movies like "Legally Blonde." These will be free to watch, with ads running alongside the video."

FANGORIA points out that titles such as THE AMITYVILLE HORROR movies, SCANNERS and THE FOG are amongst MGM's vast library.

BURBANK, CA – He first became known to audiences on May 9, 1980. Over the course of nearly three decades and eleven films (soon to be twelve with next year’s remake), he has inspired terror in the hearts of film fans the world over. He redefined the concept of immortality and invincibility. He gave horror a new face…by not having one. His name is Jason Voorhees and this is his story.

His Name Was Jason: 30 Years of Friday the 13th, the ultimate tribute documentary about one of horror cinema’s most enduring icons, has been acquired by Anchor Bay Entertainment, the leading horror programmer, for North American DVD distribution. It will be released as a “splatter edition” DVD on February 3, 2009. Then, on February 13th, 2009, Starz will host the broadcast premiere of the documentary – in celebration of the infamous date and its most famous posterboy. In addition, the documentary will have its World Premiere Friday, November 14 at the 31st Starz Denver Festival during The Watching Hour, the festival’s midnight film series. Ari Lehman, the “first” Jason and other special guests will be in attendance.

Produced by Anthony Masi (Halloween 25 Years of Terror, The Psycho Legacy) and Thommy Hutson (Prank) and directed by Dan Farrands (The Girl Next Door, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers), In addition to the full-length documentary, the DVD is anticipated to contain over four hours of bonus features, including additional interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and more.

Hosted by legendary special effects make-up artist Tom Savini – whose (literally) eye-popping prosthetics were featured in such gorefest classics as 1979’s Dawn of the Dead, Creepshow, Maniac, and the original Friday the 13th – His Name Was Jason is the definitive look at the history and cultural legacy of this 20th Century boogeyman. Extensive interviews were conducted with over eighty people involved throughout the entire Friday the 13th franchise, as well as filmmaker and fan testimonials.

Steven Spielberg & Will Smith Remaking OLDBOY?!

Could it be?! Variety is reporting that "Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in early discussions to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-Park's cult classic OLDBOY." The article states that Dreamworks is in the process of securing the remake rights for distribution through Universal.

"In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he's released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Spielberg had been looking for an opportunity to make a film with Smith, who would play the kidnapped man if all the pieces fall into place. Spielberg is looking for a writer to begin the development process."

Of Chan-Wook Park's "vengeance" trilogy, SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE is actually my favorite. But the following scene from OLDBOY is one of the greatest fight scenes captured in cinema. I love everything about it. The music, the rawness, one guy fighting well over a dozen. LOVE THIS! Can it be recaptured in an American remake?

Teaser Poster For John Carpenter's RIOT With Nicolas Cage!

A reader to SlashFilm.com sent in the first teaser poster for John Carpenter's new film JOHN CARPENTER'S RIOT starring Nicolas Cage. Originally titled SCARED STRAIGHT and attached to xXx director Rob Cohen, "the prison thriller tells the story of a troubled youth who is sent to the Scared Straight crime-prevention program. But when a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage, a lifer (played by  Nicolas Cage) is forced to help the young man out." Joe Gazzam's screenplay is said to be one of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Here's hoping this is one hell of a comeback from John Carpenter (who's last theatrical release was 2001's GHOSTS OF MARS)! Poster below!

THE CRAZIES, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN Remake Dates Set!

Overtune Films has locked down September 25th, 2009 as the release date for Breck Eisner's remake of George Romero's THE CRAZIES and January 15th, 2010 for CLOVERFIELD director Matt Reeves remake of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. THE CRAZIES update was scripted by Ray Wright, while LET THE RIGHT ONE IN author John Ajvide Lindqvist recently revealed to Ain't It Cool News that Reeves take on his novel will be adapted from the source material (his book) rather then a remake of the brilliant movie by Tomas Alfredson. DARK DAYS Coming? 30 DAYS OF NIGHT Sequel Announced!

Shock Till You Drop is reporting that Mandate International announced a sequel to 30 DAYS OF NIGHT at the American Film Market. According to their post, "The Ghost House Pictures project will be written by the first film's co-writer and graphic novel creator Steve Niles, as well as Ghost House's Ben Ketai. In the follow-up, Stella Oleson (played by Melissa George in the first pic) seeks revenge on the blood-thirsty vampires that destroyed her sleepy Alaskan town."

The one sentence plot synopsis sounds pretty much like the proper comic book sequel to 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, DARK DAYS. Here's hoping they stick with the original source material! (And original director David Slade!)

Original Directing Duo Back For [REC] 2!

Filmax Int'l announced at the American Film Market that [REC] 2 begins shooting on November 10th! The sequel to last years exceptional Spanish horror flick [REC] (which was remade for American audiences as QUARANTINE)  will once again be written and directed by filmmaking duo Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plazo. Considering how much I love the original [REC] and hell, even the short faux trailers these guys have done (check those out HERE!), I'm looking forward to their proper follow-up.

From Filmax Int'l: "Following the recent success of REC, we will be presenting the forthcoming sequel REC 2. The same talented directors stick to the same claustrophobic concept in REC 2, but find new means of transferring fear from the screen to the spectator through the recording lens."

First Zombie Pic From GEORGE A. ROMERO's New "DEAD" Flick!

USA Today has got a report on George A. Romero's latest zombie film, currently lensing in Toronto. The article reveals some details about the new film, originally thought to be a sequel to DIARY OF THE DEAD but now it's own entity.

"It's about tribalism," says Romero about the story that unfolds on a small island a couple of weeks after the original outbreak in 1968's Night of the Living Dead. "There are two factions. It's the idea that even when faced with a crisis, tribal concerns about power control people's motives."

One side wants to kill off zombified loved ones before cannibalistic urges strike. The other would rather wait to see if there is a cure for such cravings. "They want to leave Grandma in the rocking chair for a while longer," he says. "It's not a good idea."

A few characters are reprised from 2007's Diary of the Dead. "Diary was like Night. It had a brooding personality," he says. This one is more like 1978's Dawn of the Dead, "with a lot of action."

Read more about the new Romero DEAD film (rumored to have the working title of "ISLAND OF THE DEAD") at THIS link. And check out the first zombie pic below!

HALLOWEEN 2 Starts Production Early Next Year?!

The fiends from Dread Central were at this past weekend's 30 YEARS OF TERROR convention (celebrating the entire HALLOWEEN franchise) and producer Malek Akkad let some details slip about the inevitable sequel to Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN, HALLOWEEN 2.

According to Dread, "the movie will be a direct sequel to Zombie's re-imagining, but actual plot details couldn't be revealed as of yet. Tyler Mane will be back as Michael, though, and other cast members are in talks to return, as well. They're hoping to star pre-production in January and shooting to start up in March." While not officially confirmed, last we heard, filmmakers Alexandre Bustillo & Julien Maury (who helmed French shocker INSIDE) were in negotiations to direct.

Also of note from the convention, DREAD said that during the HALLOWEEN 6 panel, screenwriter Dan Farrands (the director behind the upcoming FRIDAY THE 13TH documentary HIS NAME WAS JASON) revealed that "Anchor Bay is currently in talks with Buena Vista Home Entertainment" about releasing the much-bootlegged "producer's cut" of HALLOWEEN 6: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS. Read more about it on Dread's site HERE.
