May 28, 2008: PAUL’S BRAIN TRUST LAUNCHES NEXUS 6 LEVEL FUNDRAISING EVENT
New Series of Charity Events to Include Special Screenings, Online Auctions of Rare Movie Artifacts and Memorabilia
BURBANK, CA – Paul Prischman, unquestionably “one of the good ones” – dedicated husband, father, and friend; DVD producer; gifted artist; comic book lover; musician; and worshipper at the altar of all things film – was recently diagnosed with grade IV brain cancer.
Paul’s Brain Trust, an effort to fundraise for our friend Paul and his family during this difficult time, has put together our first major event: a screening of BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT, attended by several cast and crew, and followed by a Q&A with director Ridley Scott, at the Steven J. Ross Theater on the Warner Bros. lot, Saturday, June 14th at 2:00 pm
Attendees will receive a limited edition BLADE RUNNER collectible courtesy of Warner Home Video. Additionally, we will be auctioning off ten premium passes for a private walking tour of the BLADE RUNNER locations on the Warner Bros. backlot hosted by one of our special guests from the film, as well as an opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind piece of BLADE RUNNER history.
BACKGROUND
Raised in the 60’s and 70’s on Universal Monster movies, Edgar Rice Burroughs, comic books, Tolkien and STAR WARS, Paul and his wife Cristin moved to Los Angeles from Chicago in 2000. Paul began working at the now-legendary Laser Disc/home theater specialty store “Dave’s Video.” While at Dave’s, Paul met respected DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika, who, in the spring of 2003, hired Paul to assist in the finishing stages of the comprehensive ALIEN QUADRILOGY boxed set.
Later that same year, Paul was hired by Guillermo del Toro to do storyboard work on HELLBOY: a dream project for Paul (whose devotion to HELLBOY is documented in Frank Darabont’s introduction to the HELLBOY: ODDER JOBS short story anthology).
Paul went on to focus professionally on DVD production at the Lauzirika Motion Picture Company (his list of credits as producer include THE FLY II special edition as well as MONSTER HOUSE. He was the associate producer of such titles as AMERICAN GANGSTER, SPIDER-MAN 2, GLADIATOR: EXTENDED EDITION, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN and the recent REVENGE: DIRECTOR’S CUT), culminating in his associate producing what many believe to be the holy grail of DVD boxed sets: 2007’s BLADE RUNNER Ultimate Collector’s Edition.
Paul and Cristin currently live in Los Angeles and are the proud parents of two beautiful little girls, Michaela (4) and Abigail (2).
In February of this year, an MRI revealed that Paul had a golf ball sized brain tumor in his brain stem. On March 18th, Paul underwent brain surgery. Although the tumor was successfully removed, the pathology revealed it to be Grade 4 brain cancer – Gliobastoma Multiforme (GBM) – a particularly aggressive cancer with a very low survival rate. Paul is currently rehabilitating from surgery while undergoing radiation, chemotherapy, and other costly treatments.
The outpouring of support from countless individuals who know and love Paul has been amazing. PAUL’S BRAIN TRUST is a group of Paul’s friends who have come together to coordinate fundraising events to help Paul and his family.
Our first planned event will be a screening of BLADE RUNNER: THE FINAL CUT, where it belongs: on the big screen. Saturday, June 14th at 2:00 pm in the state-of-the-art Steven J. Ross Theater on the Warner Bros. lot. That's right: the same Burbank backlot where BLADE RUNNER was produced more than a quarter century ago. Director Ridley Scott will be on hand for a rare Q&A, along with many of BLADE RUNNER's original collaborators. Attending cast and crew members will be announced soon but it will be an extraordinary event not to be missed. All who attend will receive a limited edition BLADE RUNNER collectible courtesy of Warner Home Video.
We will also be auctioning off ten premium passes for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that no serious BLADE RUNNER fan will be able to pass up: A private walking tour of the BLADE RUNNER locations on the Warner Bros. back lot hosted by one of our special guests from the film. Walk the very streets where this science fiction classic was filmed and hear fascinating inside stories from the set, firsthand. The identity of the BLADE RUNNER tour guide will be revealed soon, but rest assured, it will be a truly amazing experience. Premium pass holders will also receive a BLADE RUNNER gift bag, including a rare collectible item not available elsewhere, and our top bidder will win a one-of-a-kind piece of BLADE RUNNER history. More details to come!

Synopsis: Brandi (Mena Suvari) is a compassionate young retirement-home caregiver in line for a promotion. Tom (Stephen Rea) is a victim of the downsized economy, out-of-work and newly homeless. Their worlds crash together when Brandi, driving home from a club after too many drinks and pills, accidentally hits Tom, the impact smashing his body head-first through her car's windshield. If discovered, this “accident” will extinguish her bright future, so instead of saving him, her plan is to let him pass and dispose of the body later. Faced with this reality, Tom knows he must escape if he wants to survive.

SHOCK posted the full synopsis for THE WOLFMAN, currently shooting with director Joe Johnston behind the camera. THE WOLFMAN stars Benecio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and features creature FX from the legendary Rick Baker! It's due out in theaters Spring 2009! Check out the full synopsis below!
Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, THE WOLFMAN brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother...and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.
Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.
As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself...one he never imagined existed.![]()
Way back in December of 2007, we ran a report about a new version of THE GATE, supposedly to be shot in 3D!? After several months of silence on the project, word has come out of Cannes that Randall William Cook is in fact directing THE GATE: 20 YEARS LATER from H20 Motion Picture. It's supposedly a sequel to the original, rather then a remake, although no mention if the plan is still to release the movie in 3D. Cook, an FX artist for WETA has a long history with genre pics, having worked Peter Jackson's LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and KING KONG, as well as the original THE GATE and THE GATE 2. I'm a HUGE fan of the original, as well as it's so-bad-it's-good sequel. Fingers crossed that this is a worthy follow-up!
Check out our vintage FRIGHT exclusive interview with the writer/director of the original THE GATE (and it's sequel) TIBOR TAKAS! (Click the frame to read it!)

“SACRILICIOUS” Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust coming soon!
Bad yeast rises again as Full Moon Entertainment’s “Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust” hits “Video on Demand” and all major DVD outlets in early June 5 2008.
The Ultimate in Bad Taste
Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust
Produced By Charles Band
Co-Produced By William Butler and John Vulich
Written By Eunice Burns, Carolynn Applebee and Silvia St Croix
Directed By Silvia St Croix
The sequel to the original film “The Gingerdead Man” is this time co-produced by horror staples, WILLIAM BUTLER (Furnace, Madhouse, Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3, Night of the Living Dead 1990), JOHN VULICH (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, X-Files) and takes place at a fledgling low budget movie studio desperate for a hit… But before the film within the film “Tiny Terrors 9: Purgatory of the Petite” even gets rolling, all hell breaks loose as the murderous and violent, yet chewy and delicious Gingerdead Man makes the scene, moving from set to set, continuing his bloody killing spree in search of a new vessel before his cookie body gets too stale and crumbles away.
“This film has a little something for everyone - evil robots, angry dwarves, lusty old scream queens, vampires, possessed hand puppets, “Make-a-Wish” kids, vigorous spankings, spaceships and not to mention the depiction of an evil spice-cookie being relentlessly crucified for your sins.” “That alone, is worth the price of admission, so just get drunk, smoke out and watch it, if you ignore it, it will destroy you” Says Butler. When asked about the violent crucifixion scene in the film and the potential backlash. Butler responds “We like to think of the project as “SACRILICIOUS”. When asked about how and even more importantly WHY the project came together, Co-producer, John Vulich adds “We we’re challenged by longtime friend, CHARLES BAND, to try and put together a comedy on a shoestring budget and with a very strict time constraint”. “We agreed, only if we could lampoon Charlie’s own company and style” “He agreed so here we are.”
The film is dedicated to all of the hard working low budget film makers out there, or whoever had the balls to make their own film….and the people who mock them. The film was screened last week to a standing room only theater in Los Angeles and was received with hilariously overwhelming, positive feedback. “I think the producers of Speed Racer maybe should have considered shooting their movie in five days, maybe that’s the secret”. “I mean when you shoot a film with a four dollar budget, it’s a little hard to lose money”. “I think the fact that Charlie was such a good sport at participating in a film which is a essentially a roast of his style, really helped make it funny.”
“Gingerdead Man 2: Passion of the Crust” stars K-VON MOEZZI (Amish in the City), FRANK NICOTERO (Street Smarts), KELSEY SANDERS (Wizards of Waverly Place) and marks the return of Scream Queen veteran MICHELLE BAUER as Polly Bunderhoof, a faded 80’s starlet, turned snack-table girl whose film career was cut short by a botched set of mishapen breast implants. Not returning to the film series is GARY BUSEY who had “schedule conflicts”. “Gary was unavailable and Tom Sizemore was still in jail, so we opted for the “never arrested” veteran director/effects artist JOHN CARL BUECHLER to voice the G-man. The film also includes cameos by several other genre personalities including ADAM GREEN (Hatchet), GREG NICOTERO (KNB Effects Group), DAVE DECOTEAU (The Brotherhood), as well as William Butler, John Vulich and John Buechler.

Those fiends over at Dread Central pointed us out to this cool bit of news! Former Rue Morgue editor Rodrigo Gudino has announced his first feature length debut via the pages of Rue Morgue #78. Gudino will follow up his 2 successful short films DEMONOLOGY OF DESIRE and THE EYES OF EDWARD JAMES with a remake of Joaquin Romero Marchent’s 1972 uber violent Eurowestern CUT THROATS NINE! If you'll recall, our staffer Kevin Klemm picked the original CUT THROATS NINE for issue 5 of his GRINDHOUSE AFICIONADO column! According to Dread's post, "The film tells the story of seven prisoners being transported from their detail at a gold mine to a fort where they will finish off their life sentences. Their wagon train is ambushed, and only the prisoners, a Union sergeant and his beautiful daughter survive, and now they find themselves stranded in a mountain pass with no horses or hope for rescue. The sergeant vows that he will get the prisoners to their final destination but has to protect his daughter from the bloodthirsty gang and figure which one of the raped and murdered his wife in the process."
The article continues, "Gudino says the potential for Cut-Throats Nine is what interested him in the project in the first place, and he has the blessing of the original’s director to improve upon it as he sees fit."
Check out the trailer to the original CUT THROATS NINE below!

A few days ago, SHOCK got an interview with director Breck Eisner who was out promoting his episode of NBC's FEAR ITSELF. However, the filmmaker also dropped plenty of tidbits about his next 2 projects, remakes of both THE CRAZIES (based on the George Romero flick) and CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON. According to the interview on SHOCK, Eisner's version definitely remains faithful to the source material. "Obviously Romero's version had an anti-war bent to it in the aftermath of Korea and Vietnam, we're clearly in a similar situation now. It's the same story, we have all of these weapons from the Cold War that are in stockpiles that have to be destroyed as our environment is obviously being damaged as we go."
Also of note is Eisner's take on "the crazies" themselves. "They are definitely crazy, they are out there. They're not zombies, the biggest challenge is to make it clear it's not a zombie movie. What's great about the original is that they all don't have a coherent cohesive action, everybody acts different. There's a kid, in our version, who just stands there punching a wall, punching his fists into a bloody pulp. It unlocks their deepest psychosis - some of it is violent, some of it is sexual, some of its self-inflicted violence. For me, the scariest movie for me as a kid was John Carpenter's The Thing and the idea was not knowing who to trust, the guy you're stuck with. It's a similar concept here - can you trust your wife, can you trust your mother, your brother? That's a good deep-seated fear for a horror movie." Principle photography begins this summer in Winnipeg, Canada. Rogue Pictures is producing. For more on THE CRAZIES, read the entire article on SHOCK TILL YOU DROP.COM!
This trailer debuted at last weekend's LA FANGO show and now G4 has got it! Bloody-Disgusting debuted a great teaser poster for Ruggero Deodato's companion film to his cult-classic CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST simply titled CANNIBALS. The poster is a "sales poster" provided by Imagination Worldwide to B-D. The plan is for Deodato to direct and produce alongside Andre Koob and Pierre David. Several months back, Icons had a peek at a treatment for a proper CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST sequel, which was actually really, really good. But judging from the following tagline, CANNIBALS seems like it's own entity. "FIRST, HE SHOCKED THE WORLD WITH CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST. NOW, HORROR MASTER RUGGERO DEODATO UNLEASHES HIS NEW VISION. THIS TIME, THEY ARE NO LONGER IN THE JUNGLE." Click the teaser image below to see the full poster!

The long-gestating sequel to Neil Marshall's THE DESCENT seems to finally be gearing up for production with the recent announcement of several cast members! An article on The Hollywood Reporter states, "'Celador Films is reuniting with French-owned and U.K.-based Pathe on a sequel to low-budget box office hit "THE DESCENT.'" Jon Harris, the editor of the first DESCENT makes his directorial debut with THE DESCENT 2 from a script by James Watkins. (MY LITTLE EYE) The article continues with confirmation of plans to shoot the sequel on location in Scotland and at London's Ealing Studios over the course of 8 weeks. "The stars of the original film, Shauna MacDonald and Natalie Mendoza, will reprise their roles, alongside Gavan O'Herlihy, Joshua Dallas, Anna Skellern, Douglas Hodge and Krysten Cummings. The script sees the survivor forced back into the system of caves she battled her way out of in the first film, in a bid to locate the rest of her group." We'll keep you posted on when shooting official begins!
Our friend at G4 have let us in on it again! On this visit to the set of the upcoming vampire flick TWILIGHT they sat down with actor Robert Pattinson (you remember him as the late Cedric Diggory from "Harry Potter") and chatted it up about what it's like to be a lapdog of Satan! And if he looks a little pale, that's because he's wearing his vampire makeup! Check out the clip below:
