THE LAST WINTER Now On-Demand!?

Icons of Fright's Jsyn ("The Vault of the Forgotten and Obscure") and Adam Barnick highly recommended Larry Fessenden's film "The Last Winter". It's in theaters right now on a very limited basis, but it's come to our attention that if you're lucky enough to have IFC On Demand, or a cable company that has a strong on-demand lineup, that you might be able to order the film right now.

Click below to check out the trailer for THE LAST WINTER and the poster artwork. Looks good!

Hello "Scourge"-ous!: Icons Exclusive Look at "SCOURGE"

Scourge PosterIcons of Fright has some inside info and first-look creature pics from "Scourge", the upcoming "Thing" meets "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" inspired film from writer / director Jonas Quastel (“Ripper 2”/”Sasquatch”).

"The Scourge" is a rapidly growing organism that begins invading and consuming the bodies of unsuspecting citizens in the small town of Harborford. As it gestates, the Scourge consumes internal organs and assumes control of gross motor functions, driving the afflicted person to consume massive amounts of calories before eventually killing the host in what the filmmakers describe as “a gory shower of vomited blood and tissue.” It also likes to bore through belly buttons. So cute! I want one!

The story deals with Scott Miller, whose soon-to-be ex-girlfriend is invaded by and destroyed by the creature. After becoming a suspect in her death, he only has a short time to prove his innocence, stop the scourge, and regain the trust of his old best friend, Jesse (who just happens to be the local sheriff's niece).

While “Scourge” certainly owes it to past creature-feature films for inspiration, Quastel thinks fans will find there's something a deeper and more sinister about his pet monster. “The Scourge isn’t mindless,” he insists, “It has a personality. It has an agenda and an attitude. It knows who its victims and its enemies are, and when it wins a round, it lets them know.”

The creature was designed and executed completely in CGI, which many genre fans usually hate to hear. However, as the cost of CGI has come down over the years, Quastel and his team, though on a much smaller budget than a big studio productions, were able to utilize top effects artists and technology.

ScourgeProducer Andrew Bronstein looked to visual FX house Artifex to design the creature. Artifex's previous credits included work on big productions such as this years “Pathfinder” and the TV series “Painkiller Jane”, however, the artists were totally game to design a new creature. Bronstein explains, “Since most of the work they’ve done has been execute-on-demand stuff for big US productions, they totally jumped at a chance to partner up. Which gave them an opportunity they’d been dying for - taking a creature from concept through design and animation to finished product.”Scourge

Still, director Quastel recognized there were certain risks involved working with a purely CGI effect, one that you wouldn't see until the production was well underway. “Regardless of their peerless reputation in the field, we really took a big leap on blind faith that (Artifex VFX supervisor and CEO) Adam Stern was going to bring it home. There was a month there, after we saw the conceptual art, where we didn’t see anything. You know, we thought, ‘Oh my god, if this gets messed up ... we’re toast. There’s no movie.'”Scourge

However, once Artifex revealed the final design and 3D animated model, “I just stared at it. The detail, the texture, the overall look of the thing. It was awesome. It moved like a real animal, kind of a combination of the fantastic and the exotic, like a deep sea creature you might find on a different planet.”

Still, seeing a creature on a computer screen is one thing, getting it and your actors to interact with each other is another matter altogether. Actress Robyn Leoux remembers how she initially tried to visualize the as-yet-unseen creature with another famous monster, “I sort of started imagining the Alien.”

However, while doing post-production sound work she says even she was taken aback by the final design, “I actually saw the Scourge for the first time when I was doing ADR, and it was like nothing like I’ve ever seen before. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all. When I saw the Scourge coming out of Scott’s mouth, it wasn’t, like horrific. It was beautiful.”

ScourgeFor actor Nic Rhind, who plays Scott Miller, the support of his fellow cast and crew help immensely with the challenge of working with an unseen alien nemesis, “From the start, there was a huge amount of positivity. A real creative collective.”

Keep and eye open (and all other orifices closed) for the "Scourge".

CHUCKY Redux? CHILD'S PLAY Remake Coming, Along with New DVD

In a recent chat with producer David Kirshner, Shock Till You Drop discovered that plans are under way to bring Chucky back to the big screen. But... before you get excited, it'll be a remake of his first outing, the original 1988 film directed by Tom Holland. Why? Thank Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN. You know that one of these days, we're going to have to report on the re-imagining of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, because sadly... at this rate, it's coming! Read on for a few quotes on details about the remake and the new Special Edition DVD, as well as a link to the original full article on Shock.
"We're discussing it with Don Mancini, who has written all of them with us from the beginning," Kirschner tells Shock. "The next one we're going to do is we're going back and remaking the first one and even pushing it further and making a very terrifying version of the first one, which is pretty scary as it is."

He also mentioned an upcoming Special Edition DVD of the original CHILD'S PLAY for early 2008. "We just did the commentary on the 20th Anniversary of it, and all the stars, the little kid Andy Barkley, all of that, so that's coming out in January/February." Surprisingly no mention of Tom Holland's involvement for the DVD, the director responsible for introducing us all to Chucky. As far as we're concerned, he SHOULD be asked to be involved.

First Director's Revealed for FEAR ITSELF, the MASTERS OF HORROR Follow-up!

At the recent Scream Awards in Hollywood, California, both Shock Till You Drop and Bloody-Disgusting uncovered the first details about FEAR ITSELF, the unofficial follow-up to the MASTERS OF HORROR series, set to debut on NBC from series creator MICK GARRIS. Shock's reporting that STUART GORDON, TOBE HOOPER and JOHN CARPENTER will each be helming an episode, as well as BRAD ANDERSON (THE MACHINIST, SOUNDS LIKE) who is expected to direct an episode written by MATT VENNE (who wrote Argento's PELTS). Garris is hoping to do an adaptation of Stephen King's Home Delivery, while Bloody-Disgusting reports that STEVE NILES (30 DAYS OF NIGHT) will also be writing an episode.
FEAR ITSELF will be a new anthology series debuting on NBC sometime in 2008. LIONSGATE will be releasing the uncut/unedited versions of each episode on DVD, similar to how Anchor Bay handled the MASTERS OF HORROR series. With the names we're hearing above, and the challenge of pushing the envolope for what can be seen on regular television, the series should be interesting to say the least!

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE: First Details on WICKED LAKE!

Our contact over at Media-Blasters sent along the press release for the new Fever Dreams production WICKED LAKE, the company's 5th production to be directed by Zach Passero, based on a screenplay by Adam Rockoff (author of GOING TO PIECES). Filmmaker Chris Sivertson (THE LOST, I KNOW WHO KILLED ME) and his Scattershot Production will co-produce the film. We learned exclusively that the film will star genre faves TIM THOMERSON and ANGELA BETTIS and will feature a original score by MINISTRY's AL JOURGENSON. (Our source revealed his score will be "extremely hard") We'll give you more details when we get them. In the meantime, check out the press release below:

FEVER DREAMS' WICKED LAKE GOES INTO PRODUCTION

(New York City) Fever Dreams LLC. is proud to announce the start of production on WICKED LAKE, the company’s fifth feature film.   WICKED LAKE is an erotically charged supernatural shocker to be directed by Zach Passero, based on an original screenplay by Adam Rockoff.  WICKED LAKE is the sordid supernatural tale of a group of four co-ed girls who look forward to a relaxing weekend getaway.  Unbeknownst to them, two clans of deranged male misfits follow them to their secluded, picturesque lakeside cabin in the mountains.  The girls appear to be easy prey for the predatory perverts until the fateful stroke of midnight when all hell, literally, breaks loose!

Chris Sivertson and his Scattershot Productions will co-produce the film with Fever Dreams LLC.  Mr. Sivertson recently made his impressive directorial debut with the acclaimed indie feature, THE LOST based on Jack Ketchum's best selling novel.  His second directorial effort is TriStar’s I KNOW WHO KILLED ME starring Lindsay Lohan, is currently in theatrical release.  Chris also edited Lucky McKee's acclaimed MAY.

WICKED is Adam Rockoff's first feature-length screenplay.  Adam is the author of GOING TO PIECES: THE RISE & FALL OF THE SLASHER FILM (McFarland Publishing), a scholarly and entertaining book that surveys the 80s slasher film phenomenon that was the basis for the STARZ documentary featuring Rob Zombie, John Carpenter, Wes Craven and other genre heavyweights.  Mr. Rockoff is currently scripting Fever Dreams’ FLESH FOR THE BEAST 2.

Zach Passero is a Texas-based filmmaker who attended USC film school with such indie film mavericks as Lucky McKee (MAY, THE WOODS), Chris Sivertson (THE LOST, I KNOW WHO KILLED ME) and Rian Johnson (BRICK).  Zach lent his camera skills to Sivertson’s THE LOST as well as directing, editing features, commercials and music videos for bands like Ministry.

Fever Dreams most recent feature, THE MACHINE GIRL has just wrapped principal photography in Japan.  Their previous producing credits include FLESH FOR THE BEAST, SHADOW: DEAD RIOT and the U.S./Japan co-production DEATH TRANCE.  Stay tuned for more WICKED LAKE announcements and updates!

Three-time Oscar®-nominee Frank Darabont (“The Green Mile,” “The Shawshank Redemption”) reunites with horror-master Stephen King to write and direct this chilling adaptation of the author’s original short story. Following a violent thunderstorm, artist David Drayton and a small town community come under vicious attack from creatures prowling in a thick and unnatural mist. Local rumors point to an experiment called the ‘The Arrowhead Project’ conducted at a nearby top-secret military base, but questions as to the origins of the deadly vapor are secondary to the group’s overall chances for survival. Retreating to a local supermarket, Drayton and the survivors must face-off against each other before taking a united stand against an enemy they cannot even see!

SUPERNATURAL Duo Vs... JASON VOORHEES?!

I'm not sure if I believe this one just yet, but if it's true, it's pretty darned cool news considering how much I enjoy the show SUPERNATURAL! According to a scan of an article that appears on this SUPERNATURAL fan website, in Season 3's upcoming 10th episode, the Winchester boys will face off against FRIDAY THE 13th's Jason Voorhees?! The original article spells Voorhees wrong, so I'm skeptical, but if it is true, hopefully it'll be a stand-out episode! Let's hope with caution!
The article states, "We have cleared the rights to actually use Jason. We have a twist on it so it is not really Jason out there but we found an interesting way to bring him in so Sam and Dean fight Jason from Friday the 13th. In our world, that’s a pretty cool guest star."

Check out the scan of the article at THIS link.

Thanks to Dread Central for first posting the scoop HERE.

FRIGHT EXCLUSIVE: JOHN LANDIS IN NEW YORK!

On Friday, October 12th, 2007, writer/director JOHN LANDIS made a rare New York appearance to introduce a special screening of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON at the Two Boots Pioneer Theater! (Same place we caught WRONG TURN 2 earler in the week.) Of course, the Icons crew (myself, Mike C. and John Torrani) were on hand for the event, and to witness AAWIL projected in 35mm with a packed audience!

We arrived at the theater early with about an hour to kill, so we indulged in our usual pre-Two Boots screening ritual - feasting on pizza at Two Boots Pizza place next door! I personally recommend the Mr. Pink slice. (The Dude and the Tony Clifton are great too. Still have yet to try the Newman!)

Director Bill Lustig is a frequent patron on the Two Boots theater and was responsible for getting his old friend John Landis to show up for this particular screening. Torrani witnessed the two meet up in the lobby and shoot the shit. Bill bought two cups of coffee and handed one to Landis. In typical Landis fashion, he took one sip, threw it out and said to the cashier, "I'll have a Diet Coke."

(Landis, Bill Lustig and the Two Boots programer Ray enter the theater moments before beginning of the introduction.)

Ray began the intro by thanking Bill Lustig for helping to get Landis down for this screening. Before Ray could introduce the filmmaker, Landis interupted and said, "Ladies and Gentleman. That's the director of MANIAC COP! Come on!" And the entire audience ripped into applause.

For the next half hour, John Landis told some hilarious stories pertaining to the history of AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, starting with the origins of the script which he wrote when he was 18. (He didn't get to make it until almost 10 years later.) He fielded about 3 or 4 questions from the audience, one of which was about why he never does commentary tracks for any of his movies.

"Because I HATE commentary tracks! They're so boring! I only did the one on the KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE DVD because I didn't have to do it alone."

The same fan asked, "But if you did a commentary, you could tell that story you just told."

"Yeah, I could also just tell it in a documentary. Not during the fucking movie!"

Surprisingly there were a few members of the audience that had never seen AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, so I could only imagine what it was like to experience this film for the first time in this way. The print was good. There were only scratchs at the start and end of the reel changes, but otherwise, the movie looked and sounded awesome.

I'll confess, I had an absolute blast and this movie has not aged at all. Everyone laughed in all the right parts. The werewolf transformation is still THE best in movie history and totally rivals (and surpasses) anything done with CGI today. And after the Piccadilly Circle rampage, the entire audience applauded with enthusiastic approval. Quite frankly, I don't understand why films don't just get re-released rather then remade. And I'm not talking these cheap DVD digital projections like they just did for POLTERGEIST and NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. Those suck! Move around an actual 35mm PRINT of the movie and let audience re-discover a true horror classic! Because EVERY one in that theater loved this experience.

Kudos to Ray and the whole Two Boots staff for putting together yet another memorable screening!

JACK KETCHUM'S THE GIRL NEXT DOOR Comes To DVD This December!

THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, the film adapted from the Jack Ketchum novel of the same name finally comes to DVD on December 4th, 2007 courtesy of Anchor Bay/Starz Entertainment. The film stars Blanche Baker, Blythe Auffarth and Madeline Taylor, and was directed by Gregory Wilson from a script by Daniel Farrands (who first mentioned the project in our FRIGHT exclusive interview a few years back!) and Phil Nutman. Stephen King says, it's "The first authentically shocking American film I've seen since Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer over 20 years ago." Check out the DVD front cover artwork and specs below, as well as a link to our Dan Farrands interview.

Anchor Bay Entertainment, a Starz Home Entertainment company and leader in classic horror DVD , will release the hard-hitting, critically acclaimed true-life shocker Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door on December 4th.

Like Stephen King, Clive Barker and Dean R. Koontz, Jack Ketchum is one of the premier, best-selling horror writers of his time. His 1989 book “The Girl Next Door” was no exception. This harrowing true story of betrayal, violence and terror in a typical 1950s neighborhood, is all the more shocking because it actually happened.

Orphans Meg (Blythe Auffarth, Keeping the Faith) and her disabled sister Susan (Madeline Taylor, in her screen debut) are held captive by their distant aunt Ruth (Emmy®-Award winner Blanche Baker), a tormented and sadistic woman rapidly going insane. Ruth’s madness has infected her three sons, as well as the entire neighborhood. Only 12-year-old David (Daniel Manche, “As the World Turns”) stands between Meg and Susan and what threatens to be their protracted and torturous deaths.

Love and compassion collide head on with lust and evil, in a story of relentless suspense and intensity.

In addition to newcomers Manche, Auffarth and Taylor, the film’s talented cast includes Baker (“Holocaust,” Sixteen Candles, Underdogs), William Atherton (Die Hard, Ghostbusters, The Pelican Brief), Catherine Mary Stewart (The Last Starfighter, Night of the Comet), Grant Show (“Melrose Place,” “Six Feet Under”) and Tony®-Award winner Kevin Chamberlin (“Heroes,” Lucky Number Slevin, Road to Perdition).

This controversial film shocked and stunned audiences and critics alike. “Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door is powerful, dark, and ugly” said BloodyDisgusting. Michael Gingold, of Fangoria, said that “there’s no denying its power. (The film’s) greatest strength is the naturalism and sympathy of Manche and Auffarth’s performances ... and Baker’s quietly ferocious turn.” House of Horrors stated that the film “went to levels of offensiveness that rivaled films like Imprint or Hostel.”

No less an authority than best-selling author Stephen King advised: “If you are easily disturbed, you should not watch this movie. If, on the other hand, you are prepared for a long look into hell, suburban style, The Girl Next Door will not disappoint. This is the dark-side-of-the-moon version of Stand By Me."

Like many Anchor Bay releases, Jack Ketchum’s The Girl Next Door will include an extensive selection of bonus features including:

  • Audio commentary with Director Gregory Wilson, Producer Andrew van den Houten, and Cinematographer/Co-Producer William M. Miller
  • Audio commentary with Novelist Jack Ketchum and Screenwriters Daniel Farrands and Philip Nutman
  • Interviews with Cast & Crew
  • Exclusive Documentary: The making of The Girl Next Door
  • Theatrical Trailer

SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT Returns To DVD This December!

Yes! The controversial SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT is being re-released on DVD on December 11th, 2007 via Anchor Bay/Starz Entertainment, just in time for the holidays! Sadly, this new version doesn't include the cult-crap classic SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT PART 2 like the original pressing, but regardless it's the perfect sleazy movie to watch with your buddies this Christmas! Read on for the full specs and the DVD front cover image!

In the autumn of 1984, a low-budget horror thriller was released that ignited a firestorm of international controversy. The film was Silent Night, Deadly Night, and for more than a generation, it has remained one of the most hotly debated films in the horror genre.

On December 11th, Anchor Bay Entertainment, the industry leader in horror home entertainment, will re-release this unforgettable horror classic, decked out with all-new holiday-themed cover art that truly spreads good cheer…with a few screams!

Even before Silent Night, Deadly Night was officially released, protestors lined up to loudly decry a movie portraying Santa Claus as a deranged, axe-wielding killer. The unexpected furor so caught the original distributor off-guard that it hastily yanked the film from theaters, virtually guaranteeing a fast death at the box office. Years later, when the controversy died down and the film was released to the home video market, Silent Night, Deadly Night became the cult classic it is today, having spawned no less than four sequels, with a remake currently in development.

Years ago, little Billy saw his parents murdered by an escaped killer wearing a Santa Claus costume. The experience left indelible scars on his psyche, made all the worse by his subsequent years languishing in an orphanage, where his life was made a living hell by the cruel and domineering Mother Superior (Lilyan Chauvin, Universal Soldier).

With the help of the sympathetic Sister Margaret (Gilmer McCormick, Slaughterhouse-Five, Starting Over), the 18-year-old Billy (Robert Brian Wilson, “Search for Tomorrow”) secures a job at a toy store. But when the store’s regular Santa is injured, Billy is called upon to don the red suit. But as he does, he becomes a ticking time bomb. The traumatic memories of his parents’ murders, combined with the abuse he has suffered at the hands of the Mother Superior, propel him into a state of psychotic rage. Santa Claus is coming to town, and he’s got murder on his mind...

The film also features a notable appearance by legendary “scream queen” Linnea Quigley (Return of the Living Dead, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers). Silent Night, Deadly Night was directed by Emmy Award nominee Charles E. Sellier Jr. (producer of Breaking the Da Vinci Code, “Encounters With the Unexplained” and the cult classics Hangar 18 and The Boogens).

Bonus features:

  • Theatrical Trailer
  • TV Spot
  • Interview with Director Charles E. Sellier Jr.

Combs NOT Keen On Political RE-ANIMATOR?

In our recent FRIGHT exclusive interview with Jeffrey Combs, we spoke briefly about the much-talked about new RE-ANIMATOR sequel HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR. Refresher – HOUSE would reunite the entire team responsible for the first RE-ANIMATOR film including director Stuart Gordon, writers Gordon and Dennis Paoli, Combs and producer Brian Yuzna. In the story, Herbert West is brought in by the government to resurrect the recently deceased president currently in office because he must remain to appear alive to the American people! When asked about the idea of putting Herbert West, a character Combs has a great affinity for in a political satire, he had some interesting things to say.
"Well, this is one of those things where Stuart and I still have an on-going difference of opinion on! Because my argument was “Fine.” I love the idea of Herbert getting put into a political story where the President or Vice-President is dead and can’t be, so I resurrect him, bring him back and chaos ensues. I love that sort of idea! But where we sort of veer away from each other is that Stuart wants to do it right on the nose. Like an impersonation of Bush and Cheney and all of them."

"I just thought, firstly RE-ANIMATOR has never been a political vehicle and you’ve got a long way to go to convince me that it should be! And two, that’s fine now, but in two years I don’t know if it’s still relevant. Then as it came closer and closer to like, you have to write this thing, then you have to shoot it, then you have to post, then you have to release it before an election day, it became even more and more clear to me that it shouldn’t be an impersonation."

"It should be like DR. STRANGELOVE. Have a dynamic where there is a President and a Vice-President that are running rough-shot over all of our liberties and freedoms. But don’t have it be so obvious. When you see DR. STRANGELOVE, none of those people are particularly recognizable as anyone that’s ever been president. And yet, the point is made about power. Absolute power and corrupting absolutely. And so, that’s sort of been my take on it."

Because of the political subject matter, Gordon has mentioned in previous interviews that it’s been a difficult film to convince investors to finance.

Combs adds, "He is right. People are weary about financing it. They don’t want to go there. I’m not so sure that horror and politics are a mix."

I KNOW WHO KILLED ME DVD Specs

I KNOW WHO KILLED ME, the film directed by Chris Sivertson (THE LOST) and starring Lindsay Lohan will be released on DVD November 27th. Click through for DVD specs...

Really interested to see this one, it very much divided many of my fellow genre writer and I didn't get a chance to catch it in the theater. Apparently Fangoria loved it, Icons of Fright's own Adam Barnick liked it plenty (although Icons own John Torrani thought otherwise). Anyway, here's the DVD details from today's press release:

DVD / BLU-RAY SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE:

* Alternate Opening
* Alternate Ending
* Blooper Reel
* Extended Dance Sequence

I, for one, can't wait for the extended dance sequence. No director commentary though, but I'm sure we'd never get an uncensored version of what was going on on the set of that with Ms. Lohan (although, wink wink, some of us in the Icons team are in the know.)

"Aubrey Fleming (Lindsay Lohan) is a regular high school student with friends and family. One night, she unexpectedly disappears. Two weeks later, she is found unconscious in the middle of the woods. When spoken to, her loved ones realize she has forgotten her identity and the personality living in her body is Dakota Moss, a character that Aubrey created in one of her stories for an English assignment. Dakota denies ever being Aubrey, despite an identical appearance. Now, Dakota must try to unravel the mystery of how she and Aubrey co-exist and find out who abducted Aubrey that night."

Director's Found For HELLRAISER Remake?

Last year, Dimension issued a press release that they intended to remake Clive Barker's classic debut flick HELLRAISER (based upon his novella THE HELLBOUND HEART). The good news was that Barker himself intended to write the script. Since then, there's been no word on the progress of the project. Until now. Read on to find out who's directing...
Both Shock Till You Drop and Bloody-Disgusting are reporting that Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, the filmmakers behind the thriller INSIDE are going to write and direct the new HELLRAISER film. It will be based on a 40 page treatment written by Pinhead's creator himself, Clive Barker.

B-D seems to really love the duo's flick INSIDE and thinks these guys are perfect for the job of bringing Pinhead and his Cenobites back. Count us intrigued!

For months now, Len Wiseman (LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, the UNDERWORLD movies) was in negotiations to direct. Well, he's out and a new director is in place. But it's not going to make anyone happy... Read on...
IESB is reporting that Brett Ratner is now on board as the director of the ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK remake. Ratner's previously helmed X-MEN 3, RED DRAGON and all 3 RUSH HOUR films.

Icons Goes POSTAL?

Will wonders never cease?! Joblo.com has posted the new poster for Uwe Boll's latest masterpiece POSTAL. Well, your friendly neighborhood Icons Of Fright staff are quoted on the poster! It's pulled from Mike C.'s First Look review from a few months back. When I told Mike about it, he said, "I'm honored to be quoted on the poster of an Uwe Boll movie." Ironically enough, it's in the infamous "red comedy font" which Mike makes fun of constantly. But what can we say? Perhaps Dr. Boll is a fan? Check it out below.
