This is one of my all time favorite Anthony Hopkins films. He plays the psycho so well. He learned to throw his voice for the film and it stars Burgess Meredith who I loved from Batman and the stunning bombshell that was Ann-Margret. Corky is an uncomfortable guy who has been trying to make it in the nightclub world. The problem is, he is trained as a ventriloquist and people just don’t appreciate that anymore. Burgess Meredith plays a Hollywood agent that discovers Corky after he darkens his act with a new puppet called Fats. The adult humor and self abasement of the act endears him to crowds, so he is off to the big time. When Corky refuses to sign a contract, he freaks and runs away, to a bed and breakfast in the Catskill Mountains run by the girl he had a crush on in high school, Peg (Ann-Margret). With the help of Fats, he confesses his love to her and she see a way to get away from a loveless, abuse laden marriage. But problems arise when Ben Greene (Meredith) finds him and demands he come back to New York with him. It is a classic tale of Schizophrenia and the dark side of people. The fine line people walk between right and wrong is blurred here and you are appalled and lulled to the character of Corky all at the same time. But the people that are hurt those most, as in real life, is the people a person cares for. If you have never seen this, you are missing out. Forget Demonic Toys, it is all about Fats.
