Jenifer: Masters of Horror DVD

Story: Detective Frank Spivey (Steven Weber) takes in a hideously deformed young girl after saving her from a (would-be) killer. Little does he know that if you spend enough time around “Jenifer”, your obsession and lust for her will grow to uncontrollable lengths, and no one is safe from her blood-lust and hunger!
The Film Itself: Ok, I’ll be bold enough to say it. This is by far the best episode in the Master Of Horror series. I’m not just saying that because it’s Dario Argento either. (Although that helps) It’s just that THIS is what I expected from the show when I had first heard about it. This episode pushes the envelope on every level. Gore? Check. Sex? Check. Eating a little girl & eventually a teenager’s penis?! Check! Jenifer has me laughing out loud and cringing all in the same hour time span. Steven Weber does a great job here, both as writer and lead actor. And kudos to Jenifer herself, Carrie Anne Fleming for really throwing herself into such a disgusting character. When she’s not naked and trying to do the deed with Frank, she’s down & dirty and doing despicable things to cats, little girls, and teenage boys private parts. She pulls off both a scary performance, sprinkled with bits of real, raw emotion. I couldn’t help but laugh every time she put her head down and started crying. ‘Jenifer’ is not only a great entry into the ‘Masters Of Horror’ series, but it introduces us to a great, great character that genre fans will remember for years to come.
Special Features: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. They offer some great features on these Masters Of Horror discs. And while, I usually encourage people to wait for the inevitable box set (Since Anchor Bay has gotten us so many times with those Halloween & Evil Dead re-issues), I broke down and bought this one, because I enjoyed it THAT much. There’s a fantastic featurette called “So Hideous My Love” which features an interview with Dario Argento about the making of his episode. We’re treated to a couple of seconds of deleted footage. (Oh, you’ll know it when you see it.) It’s also fun to see Howard Berger gush over working with Dario Argento here. That kinda stuff always makes my black heart smile. There’s also good solid interviews with Steven Weber and Jenifer herself Carrie Anne Fleming. Both offer interesting stories and insight into working with a Master like Dario. (Love Carrie’s imitation of Dario.) There’s the usual behind the scenes montage, a commentary with Steven Weber and the DVD producer, trailers, and (probably one of my favorite features) ‘Howard Berger and the Make-Up of Jenifer’ where we get to see Carrie Anne transformed into Jenifer for a day. There’s some hidden easter eggs on the disc too if you look hard enough. I found one which showed how some of the digital effects were pulled off. (Like enlarging Jenifer’s eyes, for example.) Ok. So this is good stuff. Again, if I were you, I’d wait for the box set and just rent this. BUT, if you’re going to give in and start buying these Masters Of Horror discs, start with this one!!! –Robg.
