Incident On and Off A Mountain Road: Masters of Horror DVD

Don Coscarelli has directed some amazing films in his day. Phantasm is of course his crowning moment, but there is Bubba Ho-Tep, The Beast Master and Kenny and Company. “Incident…”, like Bubba Ho-Tep, is based on a Joe Lansdale tale. This was a shorter story and had less room for fleshing out, so it never made it to feature film length, but was perfect for the one hour format of Masters of Horror. Take an asshole of a guy with insane survival instincts. Put him together with a blazing hot chick and what do you have? An asshole with a gorgeous wife who can kick tons of ass. Now take that woman and pit her up against and insane mutant mountain dweller who sort of looks like Jaws from James Bond. That is basically what happens in the film. This is the classic story of woman versus monster with a modern day twist. Throw in Angus Scrimm in a bizarre role and a Texas Chainsaw cabin esthetic and you are about there. Bree Turner (Ellen, who was also in American Pie 2) is amazing as the strong willed heroine in the story. Moonface (the bad guy) could be compared to any of the classic monster stalkers like Freddy or Jason, except I don’t think this will ever get franchised. As with all the Masters of Horror, this DVD is chock full of extras. This features two different audio commentaries; both featuring Coscarelli, but one also features Lansdale and the other has writer Stephen Romero. The standard three documentaries from all the DVD’s are on here; the director interview, the “Working with…” and “On Set”. There is also a behind the scenes and then the regulars like still galleries and trailers. The more of these I see, the more I look forward to the next season on Showtime.
