This is another release from the Stephen Cannell horror line from Anchor Bay. This is one of the better movies that has come from this line so far. It stars Lance Henriksen, Sean Young and Brian Wimmer (of China Beach fame). This is the story of the Devil trying to tempt man again. It is a pretty telegraphed plot line. It doesn’t really hurt the film in any way, and at certain moments it helps with a somewhat prodding story line. Henriksen plays a farmer that saves Wimmer and his son from a truck wreck. He offers to let them stay on while their health comes back. Sam (the son) has horrible nightmares, which are now starting to look more like visions, and has just left a Sanitarium for them. Young plays the local teacher that Sam gets when he is enrolled in school. I have liked all the actors in this film from one role or another, but even with that, there is little vestment in the actual characters. The story has all the elements of a great horror film, but some things aren’t explored enough and some are delved too deep. I would love to see this story redone by M. Knight Shyamalan or perhaps Dario Argento. Someone with a truly dark writing style needs to rework this and really expand on the evil. The devil isn’t just the local old coot trying to con someone into breaking God’s law. It has to be heavy and deep. He is the lord of lies. Cannell directs things for TV and this has that feel. He needs to look bigger. He has the cast and obviously the ideas, but this is too conservative even after the advances he has made from his other films.
