Story: A group of strangers are holed up in a remote tavern, when a man bursts thru the door to warn them that a group of hungry monsters are on their way to tear the place apart. That’s it! People trapped in bar! Monsters attack! And it’s FUCKING AWESOME!!!
The Film Itself: Let me start off by saying that I never watched the Project Greenlight show, so I have no idea how this film was represented on that show. The movie itself though? Fucking ROCKS! Plain and simple. I must’ve watched this DVD 6 times before sitting down to write this review. I’ve already sat down all my friends to watch it with them. Now, is it new, original, scary stuff? No. But is it a hilarious, fun as hell, off the wall & gory good time? Absolutely. The entertainment factor on this movie alone is a 10 plus, and reason enough for you to go buy it right now!!! It’s a cult classic in the making ala ‘Evil Dead 2’ and ‘From Dusk Til Dawn’. When each character is introduced, a set of stats appears on the screen to tell us their nick name, their occupation and their life expectancy. If that doesn’t make you laugh out loud, then one of the film’s main characters will. Between “Beer Guy” (played by Judah Friedlander), Henry Rollins (as a Tony Robbin’s wanna-be) or Balthazar Getty, it seems like everyone’s trying to steal the show. Let’s not forget Krista Allen, already a natural beauty, but when she’s covered in blood and fighting monsters, she becomes the hottest chick on the planet! And of course, Clu Gulager (whom genre fans will recognize from ‘Return Of The Living Dead’ and ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 2’) is the type of bartender I wish I’d run into every time I went out drinkin’! The creatures, although not seen clearly & mostly shown in quick-cuts were effective and pretty cool looking. And the gore is fantastic! God bless the unrated DVD market. I have to give full credit to director Jon Gulager, who I think is one of the genre’s greatest new filmmakers. His style and inventiveness took a really low-budget flick and turned it into something special. I love the opening bit that he shot on 8 mm. And the pixilated flashback sequences. (Shot in video, perhaps?) He just really seems to know how to make the best of what he has, and I eagerly await anything else he’s got for us.
Special Features: There are a few deleted scenes on this special edition DVD including an alternate ending. (Which is OK, but I’m glad they opted not to use it. Less is more in the case of this movie!) Most of the clips are extended versions of things that already exist in the movie, but it’s still cool to see them here. (I really liked the scene with Krista Allen crying in the corner and seeing her son.) There’s a brief making-of featurette, which is decent, and a highly entertaining featurette with FX artist Gary Tunnicliffe who gives humorous stories about how he got into the make-up FX biz. There’s a 3 minute clip of outtakes and a commentary. I’ve watched the movie a bunch of times, but not with the commentary yet, so that’s next on my list! Folks… I love this movie. It is a MUST-OWN DVD!!! –Robg.
