Fallen Ones, The

To be honest, I was a little hesitant to watch this. I had only seen Casper Van Dien in Starship Troopers, which I totally hated and Sleepy Hollow, which I loved but his performance left little impact on me. So him being the big selling point wasn’t much allure. Robert Wagner and Tom Bosley comprise an excellent supporting cast though and I loved “That’s My Bush”, so Kristen Miller didn’t both me either. The story right from the beginning was surprisingly strong though. A colony of fallen angels (not Lucifer) that had been booted from Heaven because they allowed themselves the Earthly pleasures of sex with human women, was preparing for the future. Ammon the Destroyer is the fallen angel who fathers a family of Giants with his earthly partners, and he is killing his sons in order to cast them into the future as mummies only to return and destroy humanity. Fast forward to modern day, and archeologist Matt Fletcher (Van Dien) has discovered the body of the 40 foot tall mummy. His boss (Wagner) calls in a special security team to watch the scene, as they are trying to clear it to build a casino. The Security detail is headed by a Middle Eastern man with the last name Ammon, see where this is going? Kristen Miller plays Angela, an expert in Geological integrity, Angela is both the foil and love interest to Fletcher, and possibly the reincarnation of Ammon’s long lost lover. The effects on the film are decent, although some are a little hokey. Bosley is great as an archeologist/ Rabbi whose specialty is ancient languages and Robert Wagner is a believable developer who is only looking out for his job interests. The star of the movie is Navid Negahban who plays Ammon. He reminds me a lot of Stanley Tucci in Murder 1. This is an excellent example of what a direct to video release can be and also that films of that nature no longer need to be avoided like they were ten or more years ago. The DVD features a ton of extras including an audio commentary, a making of, an in depth look at the special effects, trailers, behind the scenes snippets and the trailer. The film was written and directed by Kevin Van Hook, who has done special effects on films such as Daredevil, Hellraiser: Hellseeker, I, Robot and the series Xena: Warrior Princess.
