Cheerleader Camp

Story: A psycho killer is slaughtering high school cheer leaders on the eve of the all-state finals at Camp Hurrah. Who’s responsible for the murders? Could it be teen idol Leif Garrett, Playboy centerfolds Rececca Ferratti or Krista Pflanza, or pre-porn star Teri Weigel? Who cares?! It’s an 80’s movie and its horror!
The Film Itself: All right, look... This film was from the late 80’s and made at a time period where movie companies couldn’t stop churning out “slasher” flicks. So, you should know what you’re getting yourself into with this movie. But at least the filmmakers themselves let us know in their commentary that this was meant to be a horror/comedy and not to be taken too seriously. The inspiration for the film came when director John Quinn had heard a news story about a girl who plotted to kill a fellow student for beating her out on the cheerleading squad! (It’s only a game, girls!) They were up and rolling under the title of ‘BLOODY POM POMS’, but eventually changed the title to Cheerleader Camp. This movie’s not a “classic”, (although Joe Bob Briggs calls it that) but if you like crap movie’s from the 80’s, then this is for you! Reasons to like it? The cast rocks. I wasn’t really a fan of former teen idol Leif Garrett until I heard him sing a cover of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ with The Melvins, so now that I like this dude, he was fun to watch in this. I know there are some Playmates in here, but let me skip over them for a minute to talk about Lorie Griffin. Do you guys know who this is?! She played Pamela Wells in TEEN WOLF. I was wondering if she was in anything else! Ok, back to the Playmates… there’s a few here, but I particularly like Rebecca Ferratti, who would later go on to have bit parts in a few of my fave comedies. (She’s the woman in Ace Ventura who asks Ace “Would you like me to take your pants off instead?” and also the hot Spanish chick that kisses Ned at the end of ‘Three Amigos’. …What?! I love details like this!) Last but certainly not least is the lovely Teri Weigel. Oh yea, I’m sure SOME of you recognize her. She started out as one of Al Bundy’s dream girls in episodes of Married With Children, and she plays Pamela in Cheerleader Camp, but shortly after this, she went into hard-core porn. And I mean, HARD CORE. Its fun to see her here knowing full well what an animal she’ll one day become. Oh, and the movie itself is a lot of fun, and I’m sure would play well while hanging out with drunken friends.
Special Features: Anchor Bay rules. We know this. (Well, except for when they put out multiple versions of the same movie, but besides that, they rule.) This disc boasts a really, really good commentary track with Producer/Director John Quinn and Producer Jeff Prettyman (who also played Sheriff Poucher). It’s very extensive and they give a lot of fun details in regards to the entire flick and its cast. There’s also an alternate title sequence, some behind the scenes photos and trailers. –robg.
