Quantcast Icons news from Jan - June 2005

6/29/05: Icons Of Fright Vs. The Fantastic Four? Granted, it's not a genre related release, but we always feel it's important to let fans know what meeting their favorite stars would be like. And this unpleasent experience required coverage. After all, Dr. Doom is THE biggest villain icon in the Marvel Universe. Read up and check out some pictures. The July edition is almost upon us and we promise plenty of horror related content. -rg.

6/24/05: George A. Romero's new film, 'Land Of The Dead' hits theaters today!!! GO AND SUPPORT THIS FILM!!! Visit the official site at LandOfTheDeadMovie.net. 6/20/05:
Wow. Thanks to Aint-It-Cool-News for mentioning our FANGO write-up. I was skimming thru the talkbalks and for the record, I personally enjoy ALL the cons. Chiller, Fango, Flashback, & Monster Mania are always good times, and you can read write-ups of all those cons on our Convention review page. There's the biggest difference. Speaking of cons, next big one is the Flashback Weekend in Chicago, sponsered by Anchor Bay Entertainment. Check out all the details HERE. Also, come back later in the week for a report from Bruce Campbell's Long Island book signing & a review from a NYC screening of 'The Man With The Screaming Brain'. -rg.

6/17/05: Bruce Campbell will be on Long Island tonight!!! Bruce has just kicked off his book tour and will be signing copies of 'MAKE LOVE! THE BRUCE CAMPBELL WAY' tonight, Friday, June 17 at 8 p.m. @ Book Revue, 313 New York Avenue, Huntington, NY (631-271-1442). Tomorrow, at 1PM he'll be at Bookends, 232 E. Ridgewood Avenue, Ridgewood, NJ 07450 (201-445-0726) & then @ the Angelika Film Center, 18 West Houston Street, New York, NY (212-995-2000) for an 11:30 PM & Midnight screening of his new directorial debut, 'The Man With The Screaming Brain'. There should be more details on his official website at www.bruce-campbell.com!!!

6/16/05: This is it! We're officially into the month of June, so let's launch our JUNE edition!!!

Do we have any 'HALLOWEEN' fans out there? Then you are in for a treat. Because as a fan myself, this has to be one of my all time favorite interviews. I got the chance to talk to Dan Farrands, the writer behind 'Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers'. And finally, he sets the record straight on what he had planned for his 'Halloween' sequel, which SHOULD have been the ultimate love letter to the fans. He also created 'The Tooth Fairy' character & worked on the 'Amityville Confidential' documentaries for the History Channel. He gives us the truth on all of the above projects and more. Halloween fans... THIS is the interview you've been waiting for!!!

With the release of George A. Romero's 'Land Of The Dead' coming on June 24th, we knew we had to celebrate somehow. Head on over to our Contest page & see the details on how you can win a copy of both 'Shaun Of The Dead' & the 'Dawn Of The Dead' remake on DVD!!!

Speaking of George Romero, how many of you out there are fans of 'Night Of The Living Dead'? Well, we got to speak to the lovely Patricia Tallman who played Barbara in the 1990 remake of 'Night Of The Living Dead' written by Romero & directed by make-up effects legend Tom Savini. Did you know that Pat's been in dozen's of films you probably didn't even know about? That's because she's a professional stuntwoman! She's risked her neck in 'Army Of Darkness', 'Creepshow 2', 'Austin Powers', 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' and more! She's also got a huge following from the television series 'Babylon 5'. Catch up with Pat now!!! And make sure you go back and check out our interview with the original Barbara, Judith O'Dea!!!

What else? How 'bout COMPLETE coverage from last weekend's Fangoria Weekend Of Horror's show in Burbank, California. We've got a review of the entire event with over 100 pictures of all your genre favorites & write-ups on what they had to say at their panels. Broken up into two articles by day, check out Fango DAY ONE and Fango DAY TWO. We're STILL working on new additions to the site, but in the meantime, also check out this month's VAULT picks from Jsyn & Mike gives us his 'Vacations From Hell' trilogy picks.

On a final note (for today, at least) we would like to send special congrats to Felissa Rose, Angela from the original Sleepaway Camp, who gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Bianca Rose Miller on Wednesday, June 8th. Congrats Felissa!!! Make sure you read our retrospective interview with Felissa from last year HERE! More updates later this week! -rg.

6/10/05:
Whew! Sorry for the delay in June's edition! We literally just got back from Burbank, California where we checked out the Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors convention! And what an event it was!

If all goes well, by weekend's end, the June edition will be up & it'll be worth the wait. We've got two fantastic new FRIGHT exclusive interviews. We'll have a full 2 page report on last weekend's Fango con complete with over 100 pictures! While in Cali, we checked out all the Halloween 1 & 2 locations in Pasedena which served as Haddonfield. So, also in the works - 'Icons Of Fright goes to Haddonfield', complete with before and after pics! The new Romero flick 'Land Of The Dead' drops on June 24th, so we'll be announcing a contest to give away a few zombie DVD's for you devoted fans out there. In the meantime, you can check out some cool 'Land Of The Dead' TV spots over at the Movie Box.net site.

Don't forget, 'HIGH TENSION' is out in theatres today! Go support a GOOD horror flick! One that's brutal, gory and Rated R as opposed to being a Japanese remake or PG-13!!! In fact, re-read our review of 'High Tension' from waayyy back in February of this year. It's spoiler free!

Jsyn's got some new Vault titles, we'll have new trilogy picks, articles, DVD reviews and so much more! So, join us in a few days! -rg.

5/27/05:
Our review of last weekend's Monster Mania May 2005 show is up!!! Check out what Mike had to say about the event & see plenty of photos!!! Next weekend's Fangoria's Weekend Of Horror's in Burbank, California. Get info on Fango's site. -rg.

5/24/05:
Jonathan Liebesman is signed up to direct the upcoming 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' prequel according to the Hollywood Reporter. This is the fellow who directed 'Darkness Falls', but don't hold that against him! He also directed the short film 'RINGS', which bridged the gap between the two Ring movies, and quite frankly was better then both films! It'll be interesting to see him tackle Leatherface's origin. The script was written by Sheldon Turner with a rewrite by David Schow, who also wrote 'The Crow' & the VERY underrated 'Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3'. Hope he explains what happened to the hitchhiker.

This isn't new news, but it's cool regardless. Mile High Comics The Beat spoke with Bruce Campbell a few weeks back on the status of 'Evil Dead 4', the remake and 'Bubba Ho-Tep 2'. Here's some quotes:

On the 'Evil Dead' remake: "We're going to do the remake and none of us feel bad about it because it's our own remake. We're not getting some 1970's TV show out of Aaron Spelling's file draw and making a movie. This is our own movie. So we're gonna update it for a new generation with new effects and tell a new story with a new cast. We'll be pulling the strings from behind. And hopefully they'll like it. I don't know when it will come about. It'll take a while to find a director and to write it and get it all set but it's gonna be made."

On 'Evil Dead 4': "Everybody wants to make it. I do, Sam does, Rob Tapert does, so that's not an issue. The only issue is that this guy happens to have stumbled into a phenomenon. So until that dies down he won't have time. And really... there's no more mystery. That's it. There's nothing beyond that. It really is that simple. To tell the guy who made Spider-man to stop so he can make Evil Dead 4... it doesn't compute."

On 'Bubba Ho-tep 2': "It's being actively pursued by two companies. That will probably happen. Don't know when. There will be a bit of prequel and bit of a sequel at the same time. There may be some parallel story elements."

Read the entire interview at the comiccon site. Bruce Campbell will also be appearing at the upcoming Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors convention in Burbank, California. And after that, embarking on a book tour. Check his site for dates & places @ Bruce-Campbell.com. Check Fango's site for info on the convention!

Speaking of conventions, we'll have a review & pictures up within the next day or two from this past weekend's Monster Mania Con 3! In the meantime, check out our past convention reviews. Check back with us soon! -rg.

5/19/05:
The Monster Mania convention is this weekend in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and they've got a killer guest list lined up, along with plenty of screenings and events! Get all the details at www.monstermania.net.

5/10/05:
Have you checked out our new interviews yet? On the upcoming 'Black Christmas' remake, Bob Clark tells us, "They are remaking it with Glen Morgan and James Wong. Glen has finished his script and did a sensational job of creating the backstory, I don't want to give too much away but, pursuing what was being implied in those phone calls... quite horrible things that happened back then. They should be shooting in the fall."

On the upcoming remake of his first film 'Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things', he tells us, "I've added a new dimension to it, a new character. There's a ghoul that murdered fifteen people, forty years before and that's what changed the island from a resort, a mansion island, to a horror island and he's brought into the story now. I thought, there's more fun to be had with this. It's going to be very funny but quite horrifying too. We'll probably start shooting in September, maybe earlier." Read the entire interview HERE! -rg.

5/9/05:
Welcome to our May edition of Icons Of Fright!!! This is actually a very special month for us here, as May 2005 marks our One Year anniversary on the web! Among our updates, head over to the Article section and check out our 'Retrospect: One Year of Icons Of Fright' article; where some of the staff shares their memories of Icons Of Fright. Vin's got his thoughts on the Technoweenie page as well.

Onto this month's FRIGHT exclusive interviews! We've got two very special guests!!!

Icons own Jsyn caught up with director/writer/producer Bob Clark! Bob Clark was the director behind one of the most imitated horror films of all time, 'Black Christmas'. In fact, a lot of his films have seemed to have set the bar for their respective genres. This is the guy who brought us 'Murder By Decree', 'Porky's' and 'A Christmas Story'. Jsyn had an exclusive chat with him on the early days of his career, his thoughts on the upcoming remake of 'Black Christmas' and why he's remaking his very first film 'Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things'. THIS is yet another classic Icons interview. Check it out!

Another Icons classic!!! This month we spoke to Edwin Neal, the infamous hitchhiker from the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'!!! Eddie told us what it was like to work on one of the most notorious horror films of all time & gave us a few interesting little tid bits about some of the people involved. We also learn a bit about his extensive voice-over work, what it was like hanging with H.R. Giger, & what he thought of the 'Texas Chainsaw' remake. Mister Neal is very open and honest with his opinions, so get ready for a very entertaining read! He'll next be seen in the upcoming 'Satan's Playground'!!!

What else is new? Don't forget to check out our review of last weekend's Chiller Theatre convention, complete with pictures from the event! Jsyn's added a few more selections to 'The Vault Of The Forgotten & Obscure'. There's new Trilogy picks up for May. And plenty more lurking around the pages of this site!

Also, the winner of last month's contest for the autographed 'MALEVOLENCE' poster is Carma of Knightdale, NC!!! Congrats, Carma! Your poster is on it's way!!! More reviews and updates within the next few days! Send us your comments and thoughts! -rg.

5/3/05:

4/28/05:
Yahoo has got the first look at George Romero's 'Land Of The Dead'!!! Check out the trailer HERE and visit the official site at LandOfTheDeadMovie.net. It's not horror, but while you're at it, you might as well check out the latest trailer of the Dark Knight in 'Batman Begins', which stars American Psycho's Christian Bale; as well as Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson & 28 Days Later's Cillian Murphey.

There's a fantastic new interview with author Nicholas Grabowsky, the writer behind the 'Halloween 4' novelization on the official Halloween website. And also, a great new interview with Karen Fields who played the original "mean" girl Judy in Sleepaway Camp on the official Sleepaway Camp website. Read them both! -rg.

4/25/05: It seems Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes are going to follow-up 'The Amityville (Not Even Close to Accurate) Horror' with 'The Hitcher' and now... 'The Birds'. Yep, remaking another Hitchcock classic. Haven't we learned from 'Psycho'? Guess not, when it's easy money. Let's hope it works out. Although, I'd love to see Platinum Dunes put out just ONE original movie for a change.

In other interesting remake news, it seems Bob Clark (Black Christmas) plans on remaking his own first feature 'Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things'.

Also, read a brand new interview with Dante Tomaselli on Horreur.net. Scroll down for the interview in English.

Who's Ash of the Evil Dead fighting now? How 'bout the Re-Animator! Well, in the comics, that is. Dynamite Entertainment, responsible for the current run of 'Army Of Darkness' comics are following up 'Ashes To Ashes' and 'Shop 'Til Your Drop (Dead)' with 'Army Of Darkness Vs. Re-Animator'. Should be a fun read. Next month look for a HUGE update to our comic profile section, which will include looks at all of Ash's recent adventures. Check out Dynamite's website HERE.

Finally, Fangoria's Weekend Of Horrors returns to the east coast on September 24-25 at New Jersey’s Crowne Plaza Hotel (2 Harmon Plaza, Secaucus). Clive Barker headlines the event. 4/11/05: To all our readers in NYC, our buddy John Torrani's short film 'Alpha Dead' will be playing tonight at 7:00PM at the Pioneer Two Boots on 3rd street between Avenue A and B. If your a fan of zombie films or sorority smut, then make the effort to catch 'Alpha Dead'! -rg.

4/8/05: Wow! We are so excited to share with you what we consider one of the best editions we've put together! Welcome to the April 2005 edition of Icons Of Fright!!!

What can we possibly say about Ben Chapman? We are honored to have a true icon on Icons Of Fright!!! Ben Chapman was the man who portrayed the Gillman from Universal's classic 'Creature From The Black Lagoon'!!! Mike C. had a chance to talk to him about all his experiences in the film industry & what it was like to work on a classic! Seriously folks, this is one of our best interviews to date. Check it out... NOW!!!

On April 19th, Anchor Bay Entertainment will be releasing 'MALEVOLENCE' on DVD. We here at Icons Of Fright have decided to celebrate by making it 'MALEVOLENCE' month!!! We've got 3 brand new Fright exclusive interviews with cast members Brandon Johnson, Samantha Dark & Keith Chambers. Jysn chose some movies & a video game (?) for this month Trilogy picks, so check those out. Jsyn also has contributed a GREAT new feature here on Icons Of Fright. This month we launch 'The Vault Of The Forgotten & Obscure, where Jay reminds us of the films we probably shouldn't be reminded of! It's actually a very entertaining addition to the site, and we are working on a way to make it interactive in the future so YOU can take part and add to the Vault! We know we're slacking on new DVD reviews, but we promise new ones by the end of the weekend! That's it for today. Enjoy our new interviews & features for April 2005 and have a kick-ass weekend! -rg.

3/18/05: Trilogy pics for this month are up. And there's a new Techno Weenie post. Check 'em both out! And don't forget to read our latest Fright exclusive interview with Night Of The Living Dead's Judith O'Dea. Jsyn contributed profiles on two films you're sure to hear about. 'CREEP' and 'High Tension'. Check them out on our articles page.

The House Of Wax official site just added a gallery. Go check it out at houseofwaxmovie.com & let's all pray that Paris Hilton dies a gruesome on screen death.

Forgot to mention this. A few weeks back, a clip with actor Paul DeAngelo was posted on the SleepAway Camp website about reprising the role of Ronnie in 'Return To Sleepaway Camp'. It's our first look at some behind the scenes from the upcoming sequel. Hopefully the trailer will follow! Jeff, give us more footage! What we've seen from the actual movie looks great. So, get excited, folks.

'The Fog' remake seems to be shaping up nicely. Selma Blair was confirmed to the cast this morning. She joins Smallville's Tom Welling, and if it's rumored that Jamie Lee Curtis might be playing Kathy Williams, a role played in the original by her mother Janet Leigh! Should be interesting. Rupert Wainwright is directing.

There's a brand new 'War Of The Worlds' teaser up at apple. And music fans... check out the new Nine Inch Nails video here. -rg.

3/16/05: Sorry, Jason fans. Apperantly all those rumors about Quentin Tarantino doing a Friday The 13th film were false. Damn him!!! Speaking of projects that won't happen, you might as well head over to Bloody-Disgusting.com and read the treatment they posted for 'Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash'. It's actually a great read and it's a shame it won't be produced. It would've been a fun flick. BD also has a first look at the cover artwork for 'Hellraiser: Deader'. Go check it out.

The fine folks at Bloody News.com have the first ever review of Paul Schrader's cut of 'The Exorcist: The Beginning', titled 'Paul Schrader’s Exorcist: The Original Prequel'. Technoweenie Vin should be happy with the early word on this badboy.

Ready to check out some new websites? The official site for the upcoming 'The Amityville Horror' got upgraded. And there are now sites open for Lion Gates 'Undead' and 'Saw 2'.

3/15/05: March edition is... for the most part up! We had planned for a bigger edition, but it seem some of the Icons staffers are slacking as far as submissions. So, here's what new for today!

A true icon!!! If you're a genre fan, then George Romero's original 'Night Of The Living Dead' is most likely among one of your all time favorite horror films. Well then, you should be excited to read our Fright exclusive interview with the wonderful Judith O'Dea, who portrayed Barbera! We spoke to her a bit about her NOTLD memories, her communications company and what she's been up to lately. Check it out. It's definitely an interview we're very proud to feature.

Go to the articles page for the early word on the upcoming horror import 'CREEP' as reviewed and profiled by Jsyn. It's written and directed by Christopher Smith and stars Franka Potente (of 'Run Lola Run'). Tomorrow, we'll try to add some more DVD & comic book reviews, as well as update a few of the other pages as well. Sorry again about the delays! Hopefully we'll be back on track for April. -rg.

3/10/05: Sorry for the delay and lack of updates!!! Things have been hectic on the Icons Of Fright front. We assure you our new edition is just about ready and we've got two great new Fright exclusive interviews that'll be up within the next few days.

First and foremost, we were saddened to learn that Halloween co-writer and producer Debra Hill surprisingly passed away on Monday morning of cancer. There's an article on the official Halloween Movies website written by original webmaster Brian Martin which is a fitting tribute to Hill. Read it on the Halloween site.

Supposedly, Quentin Tarantino is in talks with New Line to write and direct the next Friday The 13th film. This comes as quite a shocker for most horror fans. But if it does go thru, we can expect an interesting entry into the Jason Voorhees franchise. We all saw what he managed to get away with in the Kill Bill films, so if anything we know it'll be a gory treat!

Ah, The Grudge: Extended Cut featuring more footage and a more graphic rated R cut of the film will be out on DVD on May 3rd thanks to Sony Home Entertainment.

Some interesting new trailers on line now; check out the new 'Amityville Horror' trailer. As well as 'Oldboy'; the film by director Park Chan-Wook who was one of Sam Raimi's choices to helm the Evil Dead remake. Apperently Park Chan-Wook has declined the gig. Dante Tomaselli still has our vote, folks!

Speaking of Evil Dead, ever wonder what the 'Freddy Vs. Jason Vs. Ash' movie would have been like? Well, the fine folks over at Bloody-Disgusting.com have posted the complete 17 page treatment to the proposed film. Judging from the treatment, it would've definitely been a fun and respectful homage to all 3 characters. Check it out at Bloody-Disgusting.com.

Fans of the Phantasm series can rejoice. No, it's not Phantasm 5 with Bruce Campbell, but New Line has picked up the rights to produce a all new Phantasm trilogy. Don Coscarelli will be involved as a producer and it's rumored that Angus Scrimm will reprise his role as 'The Tall Man'.

2/14/05: YES! The Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors conventions are finally making a comeback!  The Fango site announced this morning that they've partnered up with Creation entertainment again to host the next Fango con which will be in LA on June 4th & 5th, 2005 and will feature guests Wes Craven, Bruce Campbell and more! East Coast show will be announced for sometime later this year. (aw, yeah!) For other cool con info, check out the Chiller website. They're announced their guests for the April lineup including a Day Of The Dead reunion! And Monster Mania has got some great stuff lined up both for the May and August shows. Check out their site at www.monstermania.net. Sleepaway Camp movies.com has a brand new interview with camp councelor Gene-o aka actor Frank Trent Saladino Jr. The interview's got plenty of never before seen photos, so it's worth checking out. And be on the look out for a sneak peak at 'Return To Sleepaway Camp' on their site soon. Need a living dead fix?  Visit: Return Of The Living Dead 4 and 5.com for info on those upcoming sequels. An unrated Blade: Trinity DVD is due out April 26th filled to the brim with special features and a never before scene extended version of the movie. Dont' forget both SAW and Donnie Darko: Director's Cut will be out on DVD tomorrow Tues. February 15th. Our buddy Jay wrote in with a great article about the upcoming import High Tension. Read that article HERE. New Techno-Weenie post too. More soon!

2/9/05: Welcome, folks to our February editon!!!

This month, we spoke with the author of 'Crystal Lake Memories: 25 Years of Friday The 13th', Peter Bracke. He gave us the scoop on the highly anticipated book, and explained the long process in which it took to make it a reality. He also shared a few of his memories from the Friday The 13th reunion, which took place at the 2004 Fangoria Weekend Of Horrors. And we couldn't help but throw in a few fan related questions. Check it out!

We also spoke with Paul Swearingen, who was one of the event organizers behind 2003's Halloween Returns to Haddonfield 25th anniversary convention. We talked to him a bit about his convention experiences, the upcoming documentary DVD, working with Lance Warlock and seeing his story 'The Second Line' come to life with Halloween alumni as the cast! Have a look!

Besides our 2 Fright exclusive interviews this month, we've added a ton of features and articles. Robg. takes a look at the latest with the Evil Dead in his 'Return of The Evil Dead' article. There's also another article on the trend of PG-13 rated horror titled 'Can horror be PG-13?' Read them both. And then check out the convention review page for a whole batch of reviews from conventions of the past. We've gone back a bit, and written about Fango 2004 (which featured a Friday The 13th reunion), the Halloween 25th anniversary convention, Chiller 03, Chiller 02, Fango 02, and a Bruce Campbell in-store signing for his 1st book 'If Chins Could Kill'.

Bummed about Valentine's Day this year? No worries. Mike's picked out 3 tales of heartbreak & dispare for this month's Trilogy Pics. And of course, there's plenty more to come. Stick with us.

2/6/05: Icons Of Fright remember both Ossie Davis & Paul Partain. Ossie made us believe in a black JFK along side Bruce Campbell in the genre favorite Bubba Ho-Tep. But Ossie was a legend and had appeared in so many great films. This was the man who spoke at both Martin Luthor King & Malcom X's funeral. Check out his list of movies here on imdb. Paul A. Partain was better known to genre fans as the wheelchair bound Franklin in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Some of us at Icons were lucky enough to meet him a few years back and he truly was a sweet, gracious man. Go to the 'Nice To Meet You' page to read about our meeting with him. We remember and salute them both. New edition will be up in a few days with new interviews, articles, reviews and features. -rg.

Hello folks. So, we've finally got some new features up!

This month's FRIGHT exclusive interview is with none other then our buddy Lance Warlock. Lance was the boom box boy that bumps into Michael Myers in Halloween 2. Which is fitting considering his dad, Dick Warlock played Michael in Halloween 2. He told us a few stories from the set, and filled us in on his music career which has led him to scoring a few pictures, including his upcoming project "Radio Mechanics". Read all about it!

We've got three new event reviews up! (Well, waiting on the pics for the last one) We've got our look at this January's Chiller convention which featured guests Dee Wallace Stone, Ashley Laurence, Doug Bradley, Angela Bettis and more! Check the Convention page or click here for the direct scoop. We've also got a review on the "Alpha Dead" screening that took place on Long Island in late December, complete with some pics from the event. Last but not least, within the next few days we'll have our write up on the Shaun Of The Dead in-store, again with plenty of pics. (Which we're still waiting on. Damn you, Wilkie!)

This month also marks the launch of our Articles section. Mike examined the State Of Remakes, while Robg. took a look at the current Convention Scene. Read 'em both.

New Trilogy Pics is up, and join us in a few days for more reviews, articles, write-ups and pics. Thanks for your patience! -rg.

We've got HUGE things planned for this year. Hopefully, you'll be seeing some of your fave zombie movie alumni & some old Texas residents in the not too distant future! In the meatime, we'd like to look back on our best interviews of 2004. These were selected by you guys! We're re-running the most popular interviews we had in 2004 according to our stats records.
